At our annual Overdose Awareness Day event, we recommitted ourselves to the hard work of preventing substance abuse and supporting those suffering from it. We’ve made progress for sure, but we have a long way to go before such events are no longer necessary.

We’re excited to unveil New Bedford’s long anticipated Herman Melville statue this Friday with a program featuring the distinguished Melville scholar Robert Wallace, internationally acclaimed sculptor Stefanie Rothnak, and one of the great actors of our era, Sam Waterston.
Thanks to a donation from @FIFAcom and @usmayors, we gave out over 100 soccer balls to boys and girls at the Gomes School. It left no doubt about the soccer’s growing popularity in New Bedford.

Herman is here! The newly forged statue of Herman Melville is now being installed next to the Seaman’s Bethel — the “ Whaleman’s Chapel” in Melville’s Moby Dick. It will be unveiled in a public ceremony on August 14.
This week the Portuguese navy’s training ship Sagres has drawn thousands to our waterfront and strengthened the enduring friendship between Portugal and New Bedford. Many thanks to Cpt. Jose Eduardo Souza Luis and Ambassador Francisco Antonio Duarte Lopes for making it happen.
