At our annual Holocaust Remembrance ceremony, Amir Cohen, the Director of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Bedford, read aloud the names of the death camps, a poignant tribute to those who perished and a stark reminder of the fragility of democratic institutions.

The New Bedford Film Festival kicks off tonight at the Steeple House Theater, and runs for the next three nights at various downtown locations. It’s getting bigger and better every year.
Today we cut the ribbon at the Flats at 8th, a fabulous, 52-unit apartment building downtown. More housing units will put downward pressure on rents. Many thanks to Duane Jackson who had the vision to turn an old bank into housing, and for the persistence to see it through.

Feb. 28 Update:To allow residents access to the city’s main business districts, the City is lifting the parking ban (1) on Acushnet Ave north of Coggeshall St, and (2) Downtown east of County St. The parking ban remains in place for the remainder of the city until further notice.
During a major snow storm, the city’s mechanics work long hours to repair plow trucks. Like a NASCAR pit crew, they get the vehicles back on the road in a hurry. I’m grateful for their unwavering dedication.
