@__drewface@mmjukic My understanding is basically that rich people just own assets that go up in value during inflation, and normal people watch their buying power shrink (even if they get raises, possibly those raises might not keep up W/ inflation)
@seconds_0 I think stuff like learning a language was often driven by wanting an outcome, which LLM/Google translate shortcuts.
I think the main reasons one would actually learn the topic today would be because you enjoy learning languages, want to see how it shapes your thoughts, etc
@jessald This seems fun. Would you mind elaborating on how this (reading?) list is assembled? I assume they aren't explicit references from the filing above, so some kind of association based on ideas flagged from a pre-existing list?
@nosilverv Concretely: I often ask my direct reports "how does this action contribute to our business goals?"
Sometimes they have ideas that align with these goals, without me being involved. They also tend to do things in ways that fit our goals better. I wouldn't say we agree 100% though
@nosilverv I think often we just aim for "minimum viable communication" where you just need enough agreement in understanding to get by (where some situations require lots of agreement and some don't).
In situations where shared understanding matters a lot, you can test it practically too.
@maebichka@connerdelights@astridwilde Even though renting with the high excess is like half price, I think it still worked out to be a negative trade in my specific instance.
Part of the problem is it just feels kind of bad in the moment, even if it was "mathematically correct" when you did the calculation.
@maebichka@connerdelights@astridwilde I took this line of reasoning and ended up in a minor car accident in 2025 where I had to pay something like $3000 USD out of pocket as the excess.
I'd rented cars a lot in the last few years, and I had never had an accident in more than 10 years driving.
@Outdoctrination If I wanted to learn a bit more of this stuff, where would you suggest starting? Presumably there's something I could be reading, in addition to paying attention to my own health.
