Stupendemys geographicus lived in the rivers and wetlands of northern South America between about 13-5 million years ago. Fossils discovered in Venezuela and Colombia show that it was the largest freshwater turtle ever known, with some shells measuring nearly 3m in length and weighing over a metric ton.

The species inhabited a vast wetland system that once covered much of present-day Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, and Peru. Fossil evidence suggests it shared its habitat with giant crocodilians such as Purussaurus, one of the largest predators of the Miocene epoch. Researchers have found bite marks on some Stupendemys shells, indicating encounters with these massive reptiles.

In 2020, newly studied fossils revealed that male Stupendemys possessed horn-like projections on the front of their shells, a feature not seen in modern turtles. Scientists believe these may have been used in combat between rival males.

The largest known Stupendemys shell was so large that researchers compared the animal's overall size to that of a small sedan automobile.
