There is a fundamental reason why Venezuelans despise people like Alejandro Betancourt. It is not just because they were left without electricity, lost their food and, in some cases, lost family members — some of whom died in hospitals because there was no power.

It is also because of the impunity, and the feeling that a corrupt person can simply get away with it because they have money.

Every society establishes its own moral compass, and that system only functions when people believe that the system is fair and that the law applies equally to everyone. If the law suddenly begins making exceptions and rewarding corrupt and immoral people who have caused harm to millions of people, then the situation becomes much, much more serious.

Modern societies base their system of trust on the belief that institutions will uphold the truth and punish criminals. Every person who is not a criminal wants corrupt individuals, thieves, and murderers to be held accountable. And if people begin to believe that the system can be circumvented through money, allowing corrupt individuals to be rewarded, then the entire incentive structure and foundation of trust within society begins to collapse.

Cases like this also shape the reputation of nations and institutions. This is not a political debate. It is not an ideological issue. It is about right versus wrong, morality versus immorality. That is precisely why giving someone with this kind of background a seat at the table generates so much disappointment.

I genuinely hope corrective action is taken on this matter, because I sincerely believe that failing to do so would be a monumental mistake for the long-term strategic interests of the United States — and, of course, for Venezuela and the Venezuelan people as well.

Venezuelans are not divided today over ideological issues. Venezuelans overwhelmingly reject socialism and communism, but above all, they despise corruption — and they despise immoral people like Betancourt.
