Each autumn they dropped a carpet of sweet nuts so thick you raked it up by the sackful. Families roasted them all winter. Hogs and cattle were turned loose in the woods to fatten on them for nothing. Turkey, deer and bear lived off the same mast. The timber, straight and rot-proof, built the barns, the fence posts and the furniture. One tree fed the people, fattened the livestock, carried the wildlife through winter, then built the house.

Then in 1904 a blight arrived on imported Asian chestnut stock, spotted first on the trees at the Bronx Zoo. It moved through the forest at fifty miles a year, and by the 1940s it had killed close to four billion trees, nearly every mature chestnut on the continent. One of the worst ecological catastrophes in the country's history.

Here is the part that should stop you. The tree is not quite dead. The old roots still send up shoots, year after year, that the blight cuts down before they grow tall enough to fruit. A century on, the stumps are still trying, and still failing.

A free harvest that fed a continent every autumn for thousands of years, gone in forty, and still reaching for a sky it will never reach again.

"Moriranno migliaia di persone!" gridano gli intellettualih al soldo della peggiore Sinistra. "È colpa nostra! Stiamo distruggendo il mondo dei nostri figli!" gridano per farci sentire in colpa. Peccato che:
1. Se c'è, la lieve oscillazione climatica è perfettamente gestibile e anzi quasi benefica: infatti al mondo muore molta più gente di freddo che di caldo.
2. In passato la Terra ha avuto temperature anche molto più alte di oggi, e la vita è continuata benissimo, semplicemente adattandosi, com'è naturale.
3. La presunta origine antropica della pulsazione climatica NON è un dato riproducibile in laboratorio. All'interno delle serre il c.d. effetto serra NON si verifica, quindi è molto probabile che le variazioni climatiche siano dovute principalmente a cause astronomiche o geologiche.
4. Se anche servisse a qualcosa, ridurre le emissioni di CO2 è praticamente impossibile: la grande maggioranza non dipende dall'attività umana.
5. I "rimedi" proposti precipiterebbero l'umanità nel passato e in un mondo distopico fatto di controllo sociale e repressione. Senza petrolio la nostra civiltà si ferma, come le auto elettriche dopo pochi chilometri, non appena le batterie invecchiano.
Quindi, cari catastrofisti climatici (che probabilmente scrivete dalla spiaggia di Capalbio): andate cordialmente a fanculo! 🤗
