An easy way to reduce housing costs right across the board in Canada would be to make all rent and mortgage payments tax deductible. That should be something that would be bi-partisan. Conservatives will like lowering taxes, Progressives will like lowering housing costs. 1/3

What I do is have a few bills that are charged to the card, and have an automatic payment to the card for that exact amount.
