1/ Story of Baby Isak Puruolte,
the youngest brave martyr amongst the tribals brutally butchered by the Meiteis

Today, the 87 Kuki-Zomi-Hmar Mizo martyrs, brutally murdered by the Meiteis were laid to rest in the Tuithaphai/Lamka/Songpi district. Thousands gathered and attended the funeral program. One of the tribal martyrs was baby Isak Puruolte, the youngest tribal martyr and this is his tale. Master Isak was born on the 10th of April 2023 at Primary Health Centre, Senvon village, Pherzawl district. He was the second eldest son of Pu Ruolneithang Puruolte and Mrs. Remruotzo Puruolte of Senvon village, Pherzawl district. After just a few weeks of giving birth, Mr and Mrs Puruolte found out that baby Isak suffered from bladder and bowel incontinence. The newborn Isak suffered health complications at a very early stage of his life. Fearing for the child's survival, Isak’s mom and dad consulted a doctor at Senvon village. The concerned doctor from Senvon village immediately referred them to go to Parbung Hospital. His mother Mrs Remruotzo Puruolte, who was dealing with birth pangs at that time, with difficulty accompanied baby Isak to a hospital in Parbung village. On sensing the seriousness of the child’s health, the doctors from Parbung Hospital referred baby Isak to Civil Hospital, located in the Tuithaphai/Lamka/Songpi district. On that very night, baby Isak was taken to Civil Hospital. Baby Isak was admitted to the civil hospital on the 12th of April and was given medical treatment by the doctor till the 16th of April. During his sojourn in the Civil hospital for medical treatment, Baby Isak’s health improved tremendously.
However, the doctor from the civil hospital again referred baby Isak to Imphal RIMs hospital stating that the infant Isak required proper attention and care because the hole where the fecal matter came out was small so it needed operation. There was no hospital ambulance available for Isak on the 16th of April so his parents hired a private motor vehicle and travelled to Imphal. His mother Mrs. Remruotzo Puruolte, out of her love for her son continued to accompany Isak despite all the pains and suffering she had gone through since giving birth to Isak. Mrs. Remruotzo Puruolte hadn’t fully recovered from her childbirth and was surviving with the help of others even during the process of urinating and going to the toilet. On the 16th of April 2023, at around sun 1:00 (noon) they reached the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal, the capital of Manipur. They fortunately managed to book an empty room in the hospital in the evening. On the 17th of May, the doctor started conducting a physical investigation on baby Isak and while this process was going on, he was simultaneously treated in the hospital to meet the demands of his pressing health issues. According to the medical examination results obtained via the investigation conducted by the doctor, baby Isak was prescribed by the doctors to undergo a minor operation. They hastily booked an appointment on the 6th of May. In the meantime, while going through several challenges at RIIMS, one element was the financial hardships. Baby Isak's mom and dad were worried. They updated and bluntly informed the doctor about their financial situation and stated “we no longer have money with us in hand, if the child is not going to survive, rather than spending another chunk of money we will happily accept and acknowledge our situation, and get ourselves discharge from this hospital. However, if baby Isak has a possibility of surviving, we will try our best to get money by selling our land, assets, and house to meet Isak's medical treatment. The Doctor responded “We will conduct an operation; we will save the life of the child” and they notified them of the appointment date and time.
On the 3rd of May, conflict and tension between the Meitei and the Kuki-Zo-Hmar Mizo communities flared up in Manipur. This had a serious impact on all the people in Manipur.
