@JesussdelaTorre@HopeBorder@FIAIntl@FIAnational May their hopes that today’ election results might create an opening for authentic democratic and economic reforms in the years ahead be realized.
@JesussdelaTorre@HopeBorder@FIAIntl@FIAnational The resilience + profound hope of the Guatemalan people in the face of relentless political repression and economic exploitation/inequality is deeply inspiring.
5️⃣ The moment after. Even if Arevalo wins, he’ll most likely face judicial persecution to challenge his possible presidency.
Besides, he’d face a Congress of the opposite political sign and deep unequal economic structures.
Intl. support will be key after today. Let’s see.
4️⃣ Semilla needs to win by a large margin. UNE told its commissioners at polling stations to challenge every vote. If Semilla doesn’t win by an overwhelming majority, corrupt officials are going to use every means to question results.
3️⃣ Tense calm. As a result of these practices, families are divided and communities are tense despite the first round being relatively pacific.
“We’re afraid that some fraudulent actions can transform uncertainty about results into anger and fights,” faith leaders said.
2️⃣ Conservative and right-wing mayors are rallying for Torres, bringing resources and funding to bus people to poll stations. The “acarreamiento” can flip certain districts, mostly rural. We’ll need to see how well polls captured these votes.

1️⃣ UNE’s tactics to buy votes. In a country with a 54% of its people believe poverty line (@WorldBank), the UNE is offering money and basic goods in exchange of votes.
“Arevalo offers structural change, whereas Torres offers immediate relief,” one community leader told us.
🇬🇹 #Guatemala, the largest economy in Central America yet one of the most unequal, chooses between Arévalo (Semilla) and Torres (UNE) today. At stage, the possibility of a new democratizing moment.
5️⃣ keys to watch these elections according to what we’ve heard in communities.
@Phillies can we PLEASE have an update on what the plan is for tonight? This is ridiculous that you’re offering NO UPDATES! How about a little communication with your loyal fans?
"We will not return to the same oppressive systems that have continually hurt our community," - Tameka Greer, Executive Director, @MemArts4Change#TyreNichols
When President Biden arrived to El Paso, he took @BishopSeitz in the presidential limousine for a private ride and chat. The bishop delivered a homily in a holy card, written by a young migrant child waiting at the border - ‘Lord, I want to be with my mom and sister soon’.
This is a vile threat to all of us on the border working to pick up the pieces of a broken immigration system, to create legal pathways for vulnerable migrants and to offer dignified welcome. This intimidation is beneath the dignity of public service.
On Guadalupe feast day, @USCCB's @BishopSeitz called for #migrants to be met with “humane processes” and “a spirit of compassion and generosity.” The humanity of people on the move is “often obscured by political rhetoric, fearmongering and hyperbole.”
