Twenty-five years later, the images still tell the story.
Courage. Service. Sacrifice. Unity.
Nearly 3,000 lives were lost on September 11, 2001. A quarter-century later, we remember those who were lost and those who answered when they were needed.
We remember them.
Twenty-five years ago, the world changed on September 11. I was a lawyer then, and what followed gave me a story I have carried with me ever since.
On September 16, I’ll be at The Jonathan Club in Los Angeles to tell that story as part of LA-ABOTA’s Love & Courage series.
Some stories stay with you. Some take years before you understand what they meant. This is one of mine.

Cocktails and heavy hors d’oeuvres before the program.
I hope you’ll join me.
25 years. We remember.

Joseph is honored to be named the bar Marshal works toward.

Nobody learned to ride a bicycle by reading about bicycles. Trial work is learned the same way, and only practice builds what a courtroom asks for.

Most of us push the fear down and hope nobody notices. Try the opposite and say out loud what you are afraid of.

The most important skill a trial lawyer can have is hearing what a brain injury client cannot say out loud. He tells you he is fine because he has never had to describe what he lost. Ask again and wait.

Gerry Spence told trial lawyers to use plain words that make a picture and carry a feeling. A juror who hears a word with no picture behind it holds onto nothing.

Attorney referrals welcome
What is it about you that's worth $150,000,000?
No one else has your thumbprints, and no one else walks into a courtroom carrying what you carry.
If you won't believe in your own value, you can't show up for somebody else's case.

You have to be willing to absorb the energy a re-enactment brings into the room. You play every part of the wreck yourself: the driver, the witness, the stop sign, the traffic through the intersection.
Nobody could find skid marks in that case because there weren't any.

Understanding what a jury feels and changing what a jury feels are two different skills. Trial work depends on the second.

Myth: If you can walk away from a crash, you're probably fine.
Adrenaline hides pain in the first minutes, so plenty of people skip the doctor and assume they got lucky.
Fact: Concussions, internal bleeding, and soft-tissue damage can surface hours or days later, when they are harder to treat and harder to prove.

Your client put their life in your hands, not a PowerPoint. A slide never looked a juror in the eye. The story only lands when you stand up.
Do you live or die by PowerPoint? Tell us in the replies.

Every personal injury trial lawyer eventually learns how insurance companies really work. They run like banks, and every claim comes down to paying as little as possible. A strong demand letter will not move the number. Real trial readiness will.
Gerry Spence spent 30 years teaching me one thing: A-plus work wins cases. It's the hours of preparation behind every result, with the client's needs first. That's the lesson in this clip, and how I try every catastrophic injury case. Have one? Let's talk. 702-528-7787
Happy Fourth of July.
We're grateful today for our freedom and for the people who gave so much to protect it. We honor them.
Being of service is what we care about most. We're thankful we get to spend our days helping people who need it, and we don't take that for granted.
From our family to yours, have a safe and happy Independence Day.

The insurance company would not pay. So I started picking a jury. Most lawyers threaten a trial they never run. I do not bluff. I start. An insurance company that refuses to pay always pays the moment trial becomes real.

If they aren't objecting, you're doing it wrong. A trial is about the truth. When the other lawyer jumps up to object, they're afraid of the answer. The lawyer they're afraid to let speak is the one you want speaking for you.
