Building a โฆ10,000,000 portfolio sounds impossible until you break down the math.
Here's the breakdown to hit โฆ10M in 5 years
Assuming ~20% annual returns in an equity mutual fund:
โข Daily: ~โฆ3,200
โข Monthly: ~โฆ98,000
โข Total invested: ~โฆ5.9M
โข Growth from returns: ~โฆ4.1M
Returns aren't guaranteed as equity mutual fund are high risk and a bad year can delay the target. But the habit is the part you control.
Small, unglamorous daily habits build real momentum over time.
โฆ10M doesn't come from a lucky break. It comes from two things: earning more, and not quitting early.
1. Fund it by earning more
If your salary can't cover ~โฆ98k/month, don't squeeze your lifestyle to zero. Put most of your energy into raising your income through high income skills. Then auto-sweep every raise straight into your portfolio.
2. Expect the timeline to feel slow
โข Year 1: slow. You're doing all the heavy lifting.
โข Years 2-3: steady. Your balance grows, but your contributions still do most of the work.
โข Year 4: returns start to outpace what you put in.
The hardest part isn't the math. It's surviving the boring first 12 months without breaking discipline.
Big goals aren't reached in leaps. They're built through automated daily execution
When some of my former schoolmates and I reconnected, a few of them approached me and said:
โTeach us the secret of wealth.โ
I didn't start by giving them money.
I started by working on their mindset.
Then I began teaching them practical skills I know: bread making, yoghurt, granola, cocoa drink powder, mayonnaise, cakes, confectionery and others.
One of them developed a serious interest in yoghurt and granola. But due to power issues in their area, she dropped yoghurt and continued with granola.
She took it seriously.
I gave her about โฆ20,000 seed capital and later helped her buy a tiny oven that cost about โฆ15,000 then.
She started from her kitchen.
Small.
Very small.
But she kept going.
Today, she has obtained NAFDAC approval for her granola and is supplying big supermarkets in Lagos.
Her business has expanded beyond Lagos, and she told me the business has given her financial freedom. Each time, her and the father prayer for me.
Haven't spoken to her in months and she sent me a WhatsApp message updating me on her progress.
I smiled.
I remembered the parable of the talents.
When someone proves faithful with little, you don't keep giving them little.
You increase their capacity.
So I sent her money this morning, and she has acknowledged.
This time,it was not โฆ20,000.
A lot more. ๐
This is one thing life has taught me:
Don't only look for people who can invest in you.
Look for good people you can invest in.
Sometimes friendship is capital.
Sometimes knowledge is capital.
Sometimes access is capital.
Sometimes believing in somebody before the world notices them is the greatest capital of all.
The top doesn't have to be lonely. Take good people with you.
By the way some others have established their bakeries, yoghurt company, etc and doing well.
How is your day going?
A month is really too short to judge a balanced fund, so don't read too much into that 65k dip yet.
A balanced fund holds a mix of NGX stocks and fixed income, so its value moves with the stock market in the short term.
And the market itself has been choppy lately. It pulled back about N468 billion just last week after a strong year to date run, and it had an even sharper correction in June, the NGX All Share Index fell over 8% that month alone before recovering.
That's normal for anything with equity exposure. It's not a sign the fund or the strategy is broken.
What matters more is whether you're investing money you won't need for at least 3 to 5 years, since that's the horizon balanced funds are actually built for. If this is short term money, that's a different conversation.
Dapo and Seun both had โฆ800,000 to invest in early 2025.
Dapo saw a small-cap up 300% in a WhatsApp group. Put in everything, no research.
Seun checked earnings first. Found a company with real profit and a dividend history, nobody was hyping it.
3 months in, Dapo's stock doubled again. "You're too slow, this is free money."
Seun said nothing. Kept adding โฆ50,000 monthly.
6 months later, Dapo's stock crashed 70% in two weeks. No news, no warning. He checked the financials for the first time, after the crash. Losses. Negative shareholders' funds. Price never matched the business.
Seun's stock never made anyone's group. Just kept paying dividends and climbing quietly.
By the time Dapo sold at a loss, Seun's pick plus monthly additions had grown past โฆ1.4 million.
Hype moves first and asks nothing. Fundamentals move second and answer before you even ask.
Hype moves first and asks nothing. Fundamentals move second and answer before you even ask.
It's not about finding the right stock. It's about being the kind of investor who checks before buying, whichever stock it is.

If someone confesses a sin or struggle to you, do not turn their honesty into conversation for others.
Protect their trust.
Pray for them.
Help them move toward Jesus.
A vulnerable confession should be met with grace, not gossip. โ๏ธโค๏ธ
