Outside of the election of a true Pope, the absolute best thing that could happen to the Catholic Church right now is for the SSPX to finally acknowledge the formal vacancy of the See of Peter.

The theological reality is clear: Leo XIV (Prevost) lacks authority due to a fundamental defect of intention. Because he intends to impose a false religion upon the Church—which is entirely contrary to the end of papal authority—he cannot be the pope formaliter.

The necessary consequence of this defect of intention is that all of his "papal acts" are completely null and void from the start. This includes any supposed excommunications or canonical penalties.

It is time for the SSPX to adopt a clear, unambiguous, and coherent theological position that actually satisfies the rigorous demands of Catholic ecclesiology. So much could be accomplished for the restoration of the Faith if they would simply adhere to the right position!

They reply with a fallacy. In other words, no one (at least among “Traditional” Catholics to give them a name), objects to an extraordinary state of necessity. That is clear, and from that point of view, one is even sympathetic with the SSPX. However, that’s not the point. The point is that, if the SSPX maintains there is a true living Roman Pontiff, as they do, it would be contrary to Catholic teachings on many accounts to proceed with the episcopal consecrations without his approval and Apostolic Mandate. The promises of Christ are given to true Roman Pontiffs, they lead the Church, they declare a state of emergency. If the Roman Pontiff is living and reigning the promises are given to him and not to any other religious society. So, it’s formally speaking a schismatic act, as long as the SSPX keeps maintaining Leo XIV is a true pope. You can’t have both (the state of necessity and disobeying a Pope) at the same time.

La vacance du Saint-Siège se concilie pleinement avec l’indéfectibilité de l’Église, car celle-ci ne promet pas qu’un pape particulier sera toujours présent sans le moindre intervalle, mais que l’Église fondée par Jésus-Christ ne disparaîtra jamais, ne perdra jamais la foi apostolique et ne cessera jamais d’être bâtie sur Pierre et ses successeurs.

Les Pères, notamment saint Cyprien et saint Léon le Grand confessent que l’unité de l’Église demeure attachée à la chaire de Pierre, laquelle subsiste même lorsque son titulaire meurt et qu'il n'y pas de remplaçant.

Saint Thomas d’Aquin rappelle que le Christ demeure la Tête première et invisible de son Corps mystique, tandis que le pape en est la tête visible et ministérielle, et saint Robert Bellarmin enseigne que la mort du pontife ne fait pas mourir l’Église, qui conserve sa foi, ses évêques, ses sacrements et sa constitution divine jusqu’à l’élection d’un successeur légitime.

Le concile Vatican I sous le bienheureux Pie IX affirme que dans Pierre demeure à jamais le principe visible et perpétuel de l’unité : cette perpétuité concerne donc l’office pétrinien et la succession instituée par le Christ, non l’occupation ininterrompue de la chaire par une même personne ou même l’absence de tout bref ou long intervalle entre deux pontifes.

Pendant une vacance, l’Église ne devient pas acéphale au sens absolu, car le Christ la gouverne toujours, elle est seulement privée pour un temps de son chef visible, tandis que le Siège apostolique, son primat et sa vocation à recevoir un successeur demeurent intacts.

Ainsi, le Saint-Siège peut être vacant parfois même longtemps selon les circonstances humaines, mais il ne peut ni disparaître ni être définitivement privé d’un successeur légitime puisque les portes de l’enfer ne prévaudront jamais contre l’Église du Christ.
