✈️NEW RESEARCH ✈️ We need to fly less to stop climate breakdown. But excessive flying is dominated by the well-off. In Western Europe, the richer you are, the more likely you are to fly three or more times a year. It’s the wealthiest who need to reduce their flying the most.
New: some Wikipedia editors have formed WikiProject AI Cleanup, “a collaboration to combat the increasing problem of unsourced, poorly-written AI-generated content on Wikipedia.” https://t.co/ynkbQowDD9
And here we are 5 years later and I still feel the same way about consumer DNA tests, and apparently the entire board of 23andMe now agrees.
Massive yikes incoming.
Gross disparity between coverage of luxury yaught sinking and refugees dying regularly in Mediterranean (3,041 last year). All such deaths are tragic but the difference in coverage is dystopian.
PLEASE read this. This is what we are doing to our kids but not fully reporting the truth of the magnitude of the planetary crisis. The media and political failure is depressing them and making them ill.

Therapy can only do so much if you’re not able to get your basic needs met. Mental health is affordable housing. Mental health is free healthcare. Mental health is free education. Mental health is food security. Mental health is financial stability. Therapy can’t fix the system.
“we find that while the term open source is widely used, many models are ‘open weight’ at best and many providers seek to evade scientific, legal and regulatory scrutiny by withholding information on training and fine-tuning data.” https://t.co/LIba4gXzRC
this paper is 🔥🔥🔥
I think it's important for people to see what this looks like as well. Real people are sitting for 16 hours a day, not even making a dollar ($1.00) per garment.
Computer science used to be about making the most useful result out of the least amount of compute.
But now due to AI it turned into exact opposite: use the most amount of compute to accomplish the dumbest piece of questionable result.
The dumber and more compute, the better.
This highlights the massive inequality of aviation and climate change.
Worth remembering though that to be among the 15% you only need to take 3 return flights per year. People who do that wouldn't see themselves as wealthy. Easy to point to 'them' but actually, it's us.
I don't think there's a better plot to illustrate AI's power demands than this one -- not only does Big Tech consume as much as countries like Slovenia, because of AI, their consumption is growing tremendously 🫠

So LLaMa 3's carbon footprint is... huge? 🤯
They estimate it to be 2,290 tons of CO2eq, compared to 550t for training GPT-3 and 66t for training *all* of the BLOOM models (1B-176B) 🌬️
New: London has a shortage of homes, but it doesn't have a shortage of golf courses.
In fact, London’s 95 golf courses take up more land than the entire borough of Brent.
Here's the case for building on some of them.
