Frequently, fans send me private messages asking how we should choose from the numerous RWA assets available in the market. Here, I will list some criteria for you:

Standard 1: Assets must be verifiable
High-quality RWA projects will disclose the details of underlying assets (such as real estate, government bonds, commodities, etc.) and provide audit reports.
Be wary of "vague descriptions", such as merely stating "anchored to gold" without providing custody proof.
Cautionary tip: Require the project provider to disclose the asset custodian and legal compliance documents.

For instance, suppose you are a business owner and you open a restaurant with an investment of 10 million yuan. The restaurant generates an average monthly profit of 1 million yuan. To recover your initial investment, it would take 10 months, and only then would you start making a profit. Now, the question is: Is there a way to quickly recoup your initial investment? Yes, there is! You can package the restaurant's earnings for the next five years as an asset and sell it. With a monthly profit of 1 million yuan, the annual profit would be 12 million yuan, and over five years, it would be 60 million yuan. If you divide this asset package into 1,000 shares and sell each share for 10,000 yuan, you can recover your principal immediately and use the funds for further investment planning. After five years, when the asset package expires, all the earnings from the restaurant still belong to you. Meanwhile, the investor who bought the share for 10,000 yuan would have received a cash flow of 60,000 yuan over five years, making a net profit of 50,000 yuan after deducting the principal. This is a win-win strategy that exchanges time for space, and this operation is called asset securitization. Then, we can put the high-quality cash flow assets on the blockchain, turning them into tradable tokens. By making the entire operation compliant, we get what is now known as RWA, just as its name suggests.

Especially with the US bond yield remaining above 4%, compared to domestic bank fixed deposit interest rates, the superiority is immediately apparent.

2. Tokenization of stocks: As mentioned in the previous article, Nasdaq has officially applied to the SEC for the full tokenization of all stocks on Nasdaq, enabling 24-hour trading and the simultaneous issuance of new stocks on the blockchain. On Thursday, September 18th, the Federal Reserve announced a 25 basis point interest rate cut, lowering the target range for the federal funds rate to 4% - 4.25%, and resuming the rate-cutting pace that had been paused since December last year. New Fed governor Michael Barr dissented, favoring a 50 basis point cut. The dot plot indicated that among the 19 officials, 9 expected two more rate cuts in 2025, two expected one more rate cut, and six expected no further rate cuts.
Changes in the macro environment will definitely bring liquidity to the market, and within this, RWA will also give rise to a different ecosystem.
The concept of RWA can be traced back to 2017-2018.
During the ICO boom, there were some attempts at security token offerings (STOs), such as startups issuing tokens to represent company equity or fund shares. However, due to the lack of secondary markets and regulatory obstacles, these early attempts had limited impact. After the rise of DeFi in 2019-2020, projects like MakerDAO began to focus on real-world assets (RWA). In 2020, Maker was the first to introduce off-chain assets, such as commercial paper, as collateral into its DAI stablecoin system, which was seen as a significant milestone for RWA. At the same time, Centrifuge launched the Tinlake protocol and collaborated with Maker to provide an on-chain channel for financing small and medium-sized enterprises' accounts receivable.
Entering 2021, the booming crypto market brought about a demand for unsecured lending. Maple and TrueFi were launched successively, providing credit loans to trading institutions and also investing some funds off-chain. (Although most of these loans were used in the crypto field at that time, they laid the foundation for RWA credit in the future.) Starting from 2022, the global macro environment saw rising interest rates, and the native yields of crypto declined. The market's thirst for stable on-chain returns made RWA a new hot narrative. Especially after the Federal Reserve raised interest rates, low-risk and high-yield assets such as US Treasuries regained favor, and a large number of projects emerged to bring US Treasuries and Treasury bills onto the chain.
2023 is referred to as the "RWA Year" by the industry. This year, traditional financial giants entered the field: for instance, large asset management companies in the US and Germany (such as BlackRock and Franklin Templeton, etc.) all launched tokenized fund products; payment companies like Visa also began to explore on-chain treasury bonds for stablecoin clearing; and the regulatory attitudes towards RWA in various countries gradually became clear. These factors have driven RWA from the concept validation stage into the expansion period.
How far can RWA go in the future?
According to data from Binance Research and https://t.co/TkZexsCynL, the total amount of on-chain RWA was less than $200 million in 2020, but exceeded $1 billion by the end of 2023; it surpassed $12 billion by mid-2024 (excluding stablecoins). Entering 2025, with institutional funds flowing in, the scale continued to soar. By the first half of 2025, the total value of global on-chain RWA assets had exceeded $23.3 billion, an increase of nearly 380% compared to the beginning of 2024.
As of August 2025, the market capitalization of RWA was approximately $25.22 billion. Among them, tokenized US Treasuries were the largest single category, with a market capitalization of about $6.8 billion, accounting for approximately 27% of the total RWA. If calculated in a broader sense and including stablecoins in the RWA category, the market capitalization of on-chain RWA would also include a stablecoin portion of $256.8 billion; but as mentioned earlier, we mainly focus on non-stablecoin assets. Besides US Treasuries, the second largest segment of RWA is private credit, including various on-chain loan pools, and its proportion is constantly increasing.
