A routine welfare check took an unexpected turn when one question changed everything.

A 33-year-old Idaho Falls woman hadn’t shown up for work.

Her car was still home.

Her belongings were still there.

But when officers asked Philip Schwab where Kaylynn Blue was, his answers weren’t adding up.

Then they noticed something unusual inside the house.

Then came the messages.

And finally, Schwab walked officers into the backyard and pointed toward a disturbed patch of dirt.

What investigators discovered there completely changed the case.

The investigation also uncovered that the couple’s two dogs were gone and that Schwab had made a series of alarming social-media posts beforehand.

The case eventually ended with Schwab entering a guilty plea.

His sentence: 25 years to life.
