This is kinda mad. Are you suggesting some form of Caribbean ethno-nationalism? Caribbean culture is celebrated and respected within the uk. Notting Hill Carnival is just one example.
Also a lot of the rhetorical devices used in grime were borrowed directly from hip-hop. From heavy punchlines, multi-syllabic flows, cadences, rhyme schemes, to storytelling, these skills were imported from the US. UK MCs would still be spitting on garage without the US influence
@JRiverStream And yes there was crossover which is why I said it’s a parallel influence and not a direct linear one. Americans would argue its linear. Grime was already moving (Eskibeat, 2step) before it took influence from hip-hop. UK drill is definitely a sub-genre of hiphop tho.
Even if you define grime culturally, you can’t escape the hip-hop influence. From fashion, to slang to lifestyle, early grime culture was definitely influenced by American rap. Now the pendulum has swung and Americans have begun to take inspiration from the UK.
@JRiverStream Btw slightly switching the convo. Grime is more of a culture than a genre. Look at people like Wretch 32, and Kano. They’re both considered Grime and UK Rap despite having more rap tunes. I think that’s because of their manner and affiliates, their fashion (tracksuit culture).
True but the fact that all of the early grime pioneers were also practicing hip-hop proves the level of cross pollination. Also hip-hop and grime both emerge from similar cultural influences such as Jamaican soundclash culture.
@JRiverStream Sure but the point it, grime is influenced by so many other genres before it is by hip-hop. Like garage, drum & bass, jungle, dancehall. So hip-hop’s influence was more parallel than linear. Besides songs like Fix up look sharp and I’m strapped aren’t even grime, it’s uk rap.
Very good article although I do find it minimises hip-hop’s influence on grime to a degree. Just to name a couple of examples, Dizzee was heavily influenced by bone thugs and harmony, Ghetts was heavily influenced by Jay Z, not to mention all the sampling of hip-hop beats.
@Zioraife The people that complain about their family prompting them to lose weight will be the same people to get up to 600 pounds and rely on their loved ones to wipe their ass for them
@MorgBGreat@1fine_sznn It’s not boys will be boys, the men behaved disgustingly and inexcusably. But she put herself in that position. She writes “the shopping was such a dream, I didn’t care what came next”. She was so enthralled by money that she put herself in a position to be taken advantage of.
