Actually, traffic studies show that it’s usually better to let both lanes be used all the way up to the merge and then do a zipper merge at the end. Blocking a lane can actually cause more slowdowns behind you. So it’s typically smoother if everyone just uses both lanes and merges politely at the merge point.
