Before filming on The Hobbit had even begun, Richard Armitage was already stepping into the role of Thorin Oakenshield.

During the traditional Pōwhiri welcoming ceremony on the first day of filming in March 2011, Armitage spoke in Māori on behalf of the cast as the soundstage and production were welcomed and blessed.

He then joined his fellow Dwarves in singing “Misty Mountains” long before audiences would hear their version in An Unexpected Journey.

A pretty incredible way to begin their journey into Middle-earth.

I am a little bit of a crank about Tolkien. I like him, but I’d like my students to read another book. “Shire-ization”—my term—of the conservative intellectual imagination is responsible for some of the more worrisome ideologies prevalent on the right as much as the internet.
