@JessePeltan Respectfully disagree. Computation has become exponentially more energy efficient, however the complexity of calculations is outpacing it. The result is Big Tech needs a return to energy abundance. They need nuclear, they need wind, they need solar and could really use fusion.
@EricDLombardi Toronto has a long history of poor urban governance and an inability to commit, raise funds and invest in long term projects. When a region is successful in spite of its own governance, it is tough for other levels of government to invest.
@whatisnuclear@Atomicrod I am in no expert, but I see numbers like 1 c per query. If so, a factor of 10? before their business model would suffer.
Many innovative industries have leveraged non-price sensitive markets to work out kinks before mass marketing. Modular nuclear has found its sweet spot.
@Atomicrod@whatisnuclear For the data center, a regulatory risk is real, economic feasibility much less so. As long as they are operating, their economic margins can easily handle expensive electricity.
@AlexUsherHESA The computer science community supported a younger Hinton through a generous interpretation of the awesome Strategic Grant program. If he was starting out in today's funding environment there would be no mechanism to properly support him.
The workforce for nuclear energy is expanding quickly. It will be challenging to more than double the workforce, and ensure the timing is right. In @WSJ by @yusmkhan

The Torch-passing events to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day this June were inspired by CANADA🇨🇦 - by the immortal words of Cdn war poet Lt Col (Dr.) John McCrae “In Flanders Fields”. The torch design came from talented students at McMaster University, Hamilton. #LestWeForget
This is what used nuclear fuel looks like in 🇨🇦.
Contained. Safely monitored. A solid. Safe.
Spoiler: it’s not like what you see on the Simpsons.
Every single one of these dry storage containers contains fuel bundles that have powered where Ontarians live, work, and play.
@JessePeltan @SuitedScience A bit tangential to your point here, and odd to say about a Nobel laureate but John B. does not get nearly enough credit for all the fields he advanced and people he supported.
@maxantonynewman@AlexUsherHESA A bit, everyone recognizes the problem but current tricouncil incentives drive faculty, departments and unis to use incremental increases to train more grad students rather than increase support for existing numbers.
"We are extremely disappointed to learn about the Disability Tax Credit eligibility requirement and the proposed $2,400/year cap.
It can be very difficult for people with disabilities to be approved for the DTC due to its strict eligibility requirements, and $2,400/year is woefully inadequate; it will not lift most people with disabilities who are eligible for the #CDB out of poverty."
