This week, I’m in New Delhi to build on the renewed momentum between Canada and India, and advance our shared priorities in trade, investment and security.
At a time of global uncertainty, both countries have an interest in building stronger economic ties and finding new areas of cooperation. In the Times of India, I write about the opportunity before us and the work underway to turn that potential into progress.

The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big”.
The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.
We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms.
Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.

For over a year, Canada has worked intensively and in good faith with the United States to negotiate a new comprehensive trade deal. We have been pragmatic, patient, and persistent. Our goal has always been to get the best deal for Canadians, never a deal at any price or on any time frame.
Late last evening I instructed our negotiators to return to Ottawa. We cannot accept what the U.S. has offered, and we will not give what they have asked.
Canada will match the U.S.’ new tariffs dollar for dollar in order to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses. We take this step confident that it is in the best interests of Canada.
In the coming days, we will release the details of these new tariff measures, which will come into force the Tuesday after Labour Day.
Canada is strongest when we are united.
Today, I met virtually with the Premiers to discuss the suspension of trade negotiations with the United States and outline our next steps to protect our interests and support Canadian workers and businesses.

Attention Canadian citizens and permanent residents – beware of marriage fraud!
It’s a crime for you and a foreign applicant to set up what’s known as a “marriage of convenience” to allow your sponsored spouse or common-law partner to immigrate to Canada. Immigration officers know how to detect false marriages, and there are serious criminal charges.
Avoid scams and learn the rules for sponsoring a spouse: https://t.co/fb3paiDqGs

I am horrified by the shooting that has killed two people at the Salsa on St. Clair Festival in Toronto.
My prayers are with the families grieving their loved ones, those who are in critical condition, and everyone who has been affected by this horrific event.
My thanks to the police officers and other first responders whose courage and fast action prevented further tragedy. Police have my full support as they work to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
