This is what a GLOF looks like in motion: a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood, sometimes called a Jökulhlaup (Icelandic for "glacier run").
Basically: meltwater builds up in a basin trapped against or beneath a glacier. Eventually the ice dam gives way, and all that pent-up water rushes out; sometimes over the course of a day or more.
At Columbia Glacier, this happens almost like clockwork, roughly once a year, with the lake taking about a day and a half to fully drain. No roads, no homes in the path; so it mostly happens quietly, without anyone downstream even noticing.
Compare that to Juneau, where GLOFs along the Mendenhall River actually threaten homes and residents in the valley each year. Serious flood-mitigation work has gone into protecting the community there.
Watching that volume of water suddenly break free from under a glacier is still humbling.
Glaciers aren't the frozen, unmoving things people picture. They're alive, shifting, releasing; a reminder that even "solid" landscapes are anything but static.

Colorado residents came together and gathered enough signatures to get Initiative 177, the "Right to Natural Gas" measure, on the ballot this November
70% of homes in Colorado use natural gas for heating and cooking, residents are worried Democrats are moving towards banning it
“The group behind this initiative, Advance Colorado, says the state's clean energy goals are putting into question how accessible natural gas will be in the future”
Democrats are saying this isn’t necessary because it’s not illegal to use or sell natural gas, except here’s the part Democrats don’t want you to know
Colorado Democrats support and advanced policies aimed at significantly reducing natural gas use, especially for home heating, cooking and buildings and moving toward electric. They even have a long-term target of phasing it out by 2050
Not what we wanted to see tonight. But the starters brought the heat. Gotta get the backups stronger. This will be good. Let's roll. It's a long season and we haven't even started yet.
Juiceman is over Stidham. I'm ready to move on to a new number 2 man. Just to many bad memories for the game that mattered most last year. And he's average at best. There are a lot of average at best back ups IMO. My 2 cents after 1 pre season game and 1 series in game 2.
