Halifax reported that house prices have fallen at their fastest rate in 12 years, with an annual fall of 2.6%. This was equal to around £7,500 being wiped off the average UK house price, which was £285,932 in June, in a year.
The Bank of England raised interest rates by 0.5ppts to 5% at its latest meeting, as inflation came in above expectations at 8.7%. This is the 13th hike in a row and is the highest level for 15 years. Some analysts expected a smaller rise to 4.75%.
Data from the Office for National Statistics shows that house price growth slowed in March, rising 4.1% in the 12 months to March, compared to the 5.8% in February. Average house prices rose £11k to £285k in March compared to last year.
The FCA said that the number of UK consumers who are struggling to meet the cost of bills and credit repayments due to the cost-of-living crisis has increased 40%, or 3.1 million, to 10.9 million from a year ago.
