Today, August 31, the verdict in the first trial of Dr. Hak Ja Han, known as the Mother of Peace, will be handed down at the Seoul Central District Court.

She is 83. She has led a worldwide faith movement dedicated to strengthening families and advancing peace.

The day before, hundreds gathered in prayer around the iconic globe outside the International Peace Education Center in Las Vegas.

This is part of a broader wave of prayer continuing around the world.

Supporters and religious freedom advocates say the case is political repression in South Korea.

May many people look beyond the headlines and prejudice in countless articles about her, and come to see the reality of the situation and the true meaning of religious freedom.

In a matter of hours, Dr. Hak Ja Han is expected to learn her fate in a South Korean courtroom. Prosecutors have asked for a 13-year prison sentence for the 83-year-old religious leader, who has denied the allegations against her.

I asked Dr. Demian Dunkley to join me on Newt’s World because people need to understand who Dr. Han is, what has happened to her, and why I believe this case is about far more than one woman or one church.

At 83 years old, and in poor health,
Dr. Hak Ja Han continues to face prolonged detention and trial.

Throughout the proceedings,
her words carried no bitterness toward the public,
no accusation against the special counsel,
and no resentment toward the government.

It was neither retaliation nor resentment.

A sitting Japanese senator just asked the question nobody in mainstream media will touch.

Kitamura Haruo is a veteran lawyer, elected to Japan's upper house in July 2025 with nearly a million votes.

He's raising a simple question about the Unification Church dissolution order:
Was this really about the law? Or about politics?

He said : "The attacks on the Unification Church were so extreme in some quarters that I thought something was off."

His explanation:
The church's political arm, the International Federation for Victory over Communism, was actively pushing for a spy prevention law in Japan.

Japan remains the only G7 nation without a dedicated law to punish espionage.

Left-wing groups saw this as a direct threat.

"When they were pushing hard for a spy prevention law, left-wing activists realized their position would be in danger and made them their target. If a spy prevention law passed, it would be a serious problem for them. So the strategy became: crush the Unification Church to weaken the International Federation for Victory over Communism."

"Is it really safe to go ahead with a dissolution order like this? When you look at the balance with other religious groups, and the relationship to religious freedom... is this really okay? I honestly have questions," he says.

Tokyo High Court rules on the appeal March 4.
Two weeks from now.

This is the first dissolution order in Japanese history based on civil complaints alone. No criminal charges. No leader arrested.

The precedent it sets will reach far beyond one church.

When the judge at the December 1 trial asked, “Do you have anything you wish to say?”, this is the full statement True Mother offered:

“For more than eighty years of my life, I have worked with the dream of attending the Creator, our Heavenly Parent, here on earth. That is why, in April of 2025, the dream of the Creator—to live on earth as the True Parent embracing His children—was to be realized according to the principle of creation. Knowing this, I dedicated my entire life to accomplishing that dream, and I resolved that I must build a palace where the Creator could dwell. So I gave everything to that mission.

I have had no interest in the politics of this country. Not in my entire life. My life has been devoted to educating humanity so that all people, as one human family attending our Heavenly Parent, receive Heaven’s love as true families and ultimately enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

Because of this, everyone—political leaders, religious leaders, academic leaders around the world—know me as the Mother of Peace, as Holy Mother Han. Regarding this current situation as well, since they have observed me for a long time, they are deeply concerned about what is happening. It is true that many high-level figures are hoping that this trial will be handled in a genuinely democratic and just manner.

I am not the kind of person the Special Prosecutor describes! I have not feared Heaven for even a moment—I love Heaven! Because fulfilling the dream of our Heavenly Parent on earth has been my lifelong wish, I earnestly ask that, if any opportunity arises in connection with this unfortunate event, you will come to Gapyeong and see for yourselves. Please come to Gapyeong. See with your own eyes what I have done.”

My heart is deeply stirred as I prepare to return to Korea. What is happening to Dr. Han and Rev. Son is not only unjust, it is a violation of basic human rights and an attack on the very soul of religious freedom.

Dr. Han is an eighty two year old woman who has spent her life serving God and serving her nation with grace. When President Trump survived the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, she wrote him a heartfelt letter filled with prayer and compassion. President Trump personally wrote her back, thanking her for being what he called the Mother of Peace. Not a political criminal. Not a threat. A mother of peace. Yet today she sits behind bars when she should be home, surrounded by love, released on bail at the very least. There is no reason an elderly woman should be treated this way. It is wrong.

Rev. Son has done nothing but preach Jesus and the love of God. His ministry has lifted thousands. The Segero Church has stood for values that honor the living God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. There is no crime in loving your country and loving your God. There is no crime in preaching the Gospel of peace.

Even Rev. Billy Kim, the legendary interpreter for Rev. Billy Graham, a man in his nineties who has spent his entire life spreading the message of hope, is now being harassed and threatened. This reveals the heart of the problem. When a government is willing to intimidate its most senior and respected pastors, something spiritual is at stake. Something moral is at stake. This is not of God.

These actions shame the principles of freedom. They silence the voices that have carried the Gospel across generations. They create fear where faith should be allowed to flourish. This is a human rights violation. This is persecution. And the world needs to know.

I am coming back to Korea to stand for truth. To defend religious freedom. To speak for those who are being silenced. To fight for the release of Dr. Han, who poses no threat. To stand with Rev. Son and the Segero Church, who desire nothing but a nation rooted in faith and righteousness. I refuse to be silent while men and women of God are treated as criminals for simply preaching the Gospel.

The Bible says that where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. And liberty must be defended. Justice must be demanded. And the people of faith must not stand alone.

Korea, hear me clearly. The world is watching. And we will not stop speaking. We will not stop praying. And we will not stop fighting until Dr. Han and Rev. Son are free.

South Korean President Lee Jae-Hyung’s admission ““Prosecutors indict baseless cases, receive acquittals, and then appeal to avoid accountability. They appeal again, causing suffering to the public. Why is this allowed? Why is the state so cruel to its people?” This should lead his government to release Dr Hak Ja Han today. She is 83 years old and has been held in isolation sleeping on the floor for weeks. It is clearly anti-religious and wrong. President Lee is right. Release her today so she can greet President Trump when he lands in Seoul. The other religious prisoners should also be released. That would turn President Lee’s words into deeds.
