Pakistans textile exports have long relied on preferential access to the EU, but the 𝗘𝗨–𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗙𝗧𝗔 is reshaping the competitive landscape. With tariff parity emerging, Pakistan can no longer depend on market preferences alone.
In their latest article, Dr. Junaid Ahmed (@JunaidEcon),(@wajidislam01) Chief of Research at @PIDEpk, and Wajid Islam , Research Economist at PIDE, argue that with nearly $9 billion in exports tied to the European market and most of it concentrated in textiles and apparel, the deal serves as a reminder to Pakistan that preferential treatment cannot substitute competitiveness.

Pakistan’s recent economic stability may face new risks as tensions rise between the US/Israel and Iran. The country remains highly dependent on the Gulf—about 81% of its oil imports and over half of remittances come from GCC countries.
In this op-ed, Dr. Junaid Ahmed (@JunaidEcon) and Wajid Islam (@wajidislam01) highlight how disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, higher oil prices, or slower Gulf economies could strain Pakistan’s energy imports, remittances, and foreign reserves.

The growth of solar energy in Pakistan is lowering electricity costs, boosting industrial productivity, and driving GDP growth through enhanced efficiency and competitiveness. It reduces reliance on imported fuels, easing pressure on foreign reserves and strengthening macroeconomic stability.
Dr. Junaid Ahmed, Senior Research Economist at PIDE, highlighted these insights in an interview with The Express Tribune for their feature on “Pakistan’s Solar Boom.

Pakistan’s export performance has remained largely stagnant over the past several decades. This study synthesizes over three decades of empirical research to identify key impediments, including high tariffs on intermediate inputs, energy sector inefficiencies, and a narrow export base. These structural challenges have constrained competitiveness and limited the country’s capacity for sustained export-led growth. The analysis emphasizes the need for comprehensive policy reforms, including the reduction of input tariffs, improvements in energy sector efficiency, and the diversification of export products, to foster a resilient and globally competitive export economy.
