The glass is neither half-full nor half-empty; it's twice as big as it needs to be.
“If you treat an individual as he is, he will remain how he is. But if you treat him as if he were what he ought to be and could be, he will become what he ought to be and could be.”
-- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Tuesday is named for Tiw (also known as Tyr), the ancient Germanic and Norse god of war and justice; it comes from the Old English word Tīwesdæg, which means "Tiw's Day". My Tuesdays are usually rough, and I land at Tuesday PM ready to sleep earlier than my usual. #TuesdayTrivia
Your imperfection is the source of excitement in life.
That sounds like a slogan, but I mean it literally.
The areas where you fall short — your clumsy Spanish, your uneven temper, your bad fitness, the conversation you keep failing at with your kid — those aren't failings per se, they're puzzles.
And puzzles are what make days worth getting up for.
I learned this the hard way. When I was 25, I moved to Barcelona to chase a girl I'd fallen in love with. I'd studied German in high school — useful for nothing in Spain — and I spoke Spanish like a toddler. It was… humiliating. But I knew I had two choices: decide Spanish was stupid and shut down, or treat myself the way I now treat my grandsons, who are also learning to talk. Nobody tells a three-year-old he's an idiot for saying "hopital." You teach him the word and let him try again.
So that's what I did. About a year in, I could leave the house without rehearsing sentences. Decades later, I lecture in Spanish; I did live television in Spanish a few weeks ago. I still have an accent, mind you. But the accent is evidence that I was once a 25-year-old idiot who decided to keep going.
The move that made the difference was small. I didn't say my Spanish was terrible. I said: my Spanish could be better, and here's how. Not bad — improvable. I raised my kids this way too. When something wasn't right, I wouldn't tell them it was bad. I'd tell them it could be better, and we'd work out how. They wanted that. People want that, when you offer it without contempt. Because everyone wants to be better.
Imagine a world in which you were actually perfect. Finished. Done. With nothing to chase, nothing to walk toward. Imagine what a boring world that would be.
Your imperfection is the source of your excitement in life. Don't be in such a hurry to fix that.
What really drives leaders to resist remote work isn't productivity. It’s ego.
Our new data: Ordering people in full-time is a power & status move. Bosses want to be worshiped at the office altar.
Policies shouldn’t be vanity projects. Hybrid is better for people & performance.
Looking forward to a birthday pontoon boat and a couple of nights under the stars with good friends. I have jonesed for lake swimming for too long! #BirthdaySpecial#lifeisgood#funwithfriends
Some ways to find stillness right now:
- Go for a solo nature walk
- Write in a journal
- Lock into a creative activity
- Vigorous exercise: run laps, swim
- Help someone else
People think you have to travel for peace but Marcus Aurelius says we can turn inward at any moment.
If you’re not failing, you’re not learning.
If you’re not learning, you’re not growing.
If you’re not growing, you’re not living.
Living without failing is failing to live.
