Listening to Sing About Me for the first time and hearing the verse get cut off by gunfire was real rap cinema smh. That shit really hit different. True Scorsese shit.
Crazy to think of now, but imagine, at the height of the War on Terror hysteria, Patriot Act censorship and anti-Muslim imperialist fervor, on his debut album Food and Liquor, released through a major label in Atlantic Records, Lupe opened by reciting the Fatiha, and then had songs like American Terrorist and Hurt Me Soul on there. It went on to have multiple Grammy nominations and a win.
I'll never forget being in grade 7 listening to that Intro for the first time in an Apple Store. The references to capitalist, racial and imperialist violence were endless. That moment is where so much of my political education began.
