A harrovian told me how sad it was for 1914-18. Before and after they were the most accomplished men you could imagine. During that period, died, 19, was a constant refrain.

The scale of the British upper class's sacrifice in World War I has been largely forgotten, but was so high as to be a civilizational catastrophe on a scale unseen for centuries: the ~20% death toll it suffered hadn't been seen since the Wars of the Roses

And, much like that prior catastrophe, this one brought immense change. The Wars of the Roses brought the Tudors and, through them, eventually, Protestantism, a massive change. The Great War brought with it a snuffing out of the greatness of spirit and cultivation of excellence that had formerly defined the British landed elite. With their heirs dead in Flanders, their estates and incomes confiscated through confiscatory taxation and onerous regulations, and the world for which they long struggled and fought crumbling as egalitarian democracy rose in its stead, the old world of the landed elite faded away, and with it the residual cutural Christianity the Anglican order and its fusion with the aristocracy had created. Having fought for a nation that showed it despised them, they and their world faded, as did its virtues
