Yes, people still would have said something about it because that is not the way that someone who has been around football in any kind of meaningful way speaks (you only playing one year and thinking no one would find it strange is a salient example). Even if he used the terminology correctly no “football guy” would use some random tip drill exercise in an attempt to compliment AOC like he was doing in that sentence. And spoiler alert, that’s not what he or whoever authored the statement was doing anyways
