When Black Boys Lose a Close Friend
Reflecting on this over the last few days, the pain is often deep but rarely spoken about. From a young age, Black boys are taught to be strong, to keep going, and not to show too much emotion. So why is grief something they are expected to carry quietly.
When trauma isn’t spoken about, it doesn’t disappear. It shows up in other ways… anger, withdrawal, risk-taking, difficulty concentrating, or emotional numbness. These are normal trauma responses, but they are often misread as ‘bad behaviour’ instead of care and are more likely to face punishment, exclusion, or criminalisation.
Unspoken grief can turn into fear, guilt, and hypervigilance, especially when the loss involves violence. Without safe spaces to talk, these feelings can harden and shape decisions in harmful ways. Silence becomes a survival strategy, not a choice.
Black boys need spaces where they can speak about loss without judgment or consequences. Being heard helps them make sense of what happened and reminds them they don’t have to carry grief alone.
If we want to protect Black boys, we must stop demanding silence and start listening.
Loss changes lives, but when trauma is spoken, healing becomes possible.
Celebrating Men and Boys… #IMD2025
Imagine a future where Black boys are not celebrated for being ‘strong’ but for being soft, safe, and seen.
Where trauma-informed practice is not a pilot project but a promise.
Where schools, youth organisations, and statutory systems are places of repair, not reproduction of harm.
Where a boy’s first experience of support is not after a tragedy, but long before.

When a young Black boy says, “I got you, especially when I make it,” it’s deeper than it sounds. He’s not just talking for talking sake, he’s speaking from the heart.
Those words mean ‘thank you for believing in me.’ They mean ‘I see what you’ve done for me, and when I win, we all win.’
For so many young Black boys, ‘making it’ isn’t just about money or fame. It’s about surviving, pushing through, proving people wrong, and staying true. It’s about remembering who showed love when life felt hard.
So when he says ‘I got you,’ it’s not just a promise… it’s love, loyalty, and hope rolled into one.
Fantastic two days spent in Stockholm
When young people live with trauma and violence, they adapt to survive, but rarely get space to heal.
At Juvenis (UK) and Solega (Sweden), we believe healing begins with understanding trauma as a response to harm, not a deficit in character.
Our work combines therapeutic, relational, and systemic support, recognising that safety, belonging, and trust are the foundations of recovery.
True healing happens in relationships, not institutions.

New report alert: Young people at risk of violence are too often excluded from mental health support — unless they offend first.
The report was commissioned by the Youth Endowment Fund, as part of a wider partnership with @educationgovuk, looking at how well the system protects young people at risk of violence.
