Why the Open Letter by 42 Former Judges Concerns Every Citizen
In public governance and democratic systems, institutional integrity is the hardest asset to build and the easiest to compromise for transient gains.
Over the past months, we have witnessed an unsettling normalisation of performative outrage, where constitutional bodies are systematically vilified the moment an electoral outcome does not align with partisan calculations.
This is why the recent open appeal by 42 former judges and retired constitutional veterans must be treated as an urgent civic reckoning. Their message cuts directly to the core of the issue stating that criticism of institutions is an essential democratic right, but persistent, evidence-free denigration fundamentally is NOT.
What makes this pattern particularly dangerous is the deliberate conflation of legitimate legal scrutiny with manufactured political spectacle. Grievances that ought to be submitted through sworn affidavits and substantiated before a court of law are instead played out in high-decibel press conferences.
Routine administrative procedures, such as the Special Intensive Revision under the Representation of the People Act, a statutory exercise designed to cleanse voter rolls of deceased entries and duplicate records, are opportunistically rebranded as conspiracies, despite having stood the rigorous test of time and constitutional scrutiny by the Supreme Court of India.
When victories achieved under the very same electoral framework are celebrated without question, but defeats are greeted with claims of systemic fraud, the intent is clearly not reform. It is a calculated bid to sow confusion.
As professionals, thinkers, and citizens, we must be vigilant about the broader cost of this political bad faith. As the jurists soberly warned, trust is the foundational currency of democracy, and when the ballot is continuously delegitimised, the vacuum is invariably occupied by instability and fringe forces.
Our constitutional watchdogs do not belong to political factions. They belong to the people of India, and safeguarding their integrity from performative cynicism is our duty as responsible citizens.

@elonmusk Ya and your startlink would be of great help to spread anarchy in this country. First address those issues Mr. Musk. And let us know what you are doing to contain racial abuse of Indians on X.
@elonmusk The audacity of you guys is just unbelievable. We are way happy without Starlink then having something that aids in anarchy. Put checks and control and follow the local data localisation law.
