This news report is in today's DMN, but written by the Austin American Statesman. It details how 3 City of Austin employees were also working for City of Dallas.

Work from home let them have the flexibility and lack of supervision to do this. A lot of City of Dallas employees are working from home 1-5 days a week.

Since COVID, there has been a massive loss of productivity at City Hall where entire departments have empty offices or just a few people in a sea of cubes/offices.

I complained about the massive number of fleet vehicles sitting unmoved in our parking garage. We have far too many fleet vehicles. So the city moved many of them to other locations so I couldn't see them daily or send other Councilmembers to look. What that action has revealed is there are a lot of empty spots in the parking garage, even as the city manager says we don't have enough spots for employees. That may be true if all employees show up to work, but based on the parking garage, we have a massive work-from-home culture. Or maybe, work-for-Austin-and-Dallas-from-home culture.

There are also many employees who are extremely devoted and hard-working, and it must be difficult for their morale to give so much of their time and talents when they can see what is happening.

As reported, Dallas became aware of this situation and helped the investigation. I hope Dallas will release its own report on what allowed this to happen and management guidance and policy reform to ensure this doesn't happen again. One of the employees who worked for City of Dallas and Austin simultaneously was the head of IT Security, later the head of IT.

So far, the purchase of the DMN by the same owner as Houston, Austin, and San Antonio's daily newspaper has turned out to have improved reporting. Congrats on this story AAS reporter Chaya Tong.

🚨 ANOTHER FLOCK CAMERA INVESTIGATION IN TEXAS: A Lufkin police officer has been arrested and a second officer placed on administrative leave amid an investigation into alleged misuse of the city’s Flock license plate reader system.

Police say Officer Zachary Anthony Klein, an 11-year veteran, was arrested Thursday by the Texas Rangers and charged with abuse of official capacity and tampering with a government record.

The department says it discovered potential issues during an audit. Chief Travis Brazil then requested an outside investigation by the Texas Rangers.

👉 Lufkin Police have now suspended use of Flock cameras department-wide while the investigations continue.

This comes as questions continue to grow across Texas about who has access to these tools and how they’re being used.
