I think part of the reason the Sonic Boom cartoon was as funny as it was is because the game flopped so hard, they didn't bother with trying to tie the show in with it.

So instead of it trying to be a Sonic Boom tie-in show, it gave the writers room to just throw ideas at the wall and see what sticks.

I can't say for sure, but I'd like to think writing for it was fun.
