I love the conversations happening around good, quality direct instruction. @kaganonline Dr. Spencer Kagan reminds us, “Cooperative learning isn’t antithetical to direct instruction. Cooperative learning complements rather than replaces direct instruction; it is used to cement learning that occurs via direct instruction.”

It’s not either/or. We can deliver clear, direct instruction and structure opportunities for students to actively process and apply what they learn together.

I recently read a concern that it’s impossible to implement cooperative learning with a full teaching load and a huge curriculum. This is a valid concern because teachers pour a tremendous amount of time into planning; however, I think it misunderstands what cooperative learning really is. @KaganOnline Dr. Spencer Kagan says, “Don’t do cooperative learning lessons; make cooperative learning part of every lesson.”

Cooperative learning doesn't replace direct instruction; it complements it. You still teach your full curriculum, but there is a small, powerful shift. Here’s an example from our school. Turn and Talk is embedded throughout our curriculum; however, we replace it with Pair Share or Timed Pair Share. If you’re already using Turn and Talk, try swapping it with Timed Pair Share. Watch and listen to your students. It will look, sound, and feel different. I think you’ll see a positive difference too, thanks to the tighter structured interaction!
