KAGRC was represented during the handover and commercialisation of the Bachuma National Livestock Quarantine Centre in Taita-Taveta, a strategic investment aimed at opening Kenya’s livestock sector to high-value global markets.
Speaking during the event, CS Sen. Mutahi Kagwe emphasised that the project is not simply about putting up a facility, but about creating jobs, opening markets and putting more money in the hands of livestock farmers and local communities.
With the centre set to provide quarantine, inspection and certification services for livestock destined for export, Bachuma is expected to strengthen Kenya’s capacity to meet international animal-health requirements and unlock significant opportunities for livestock producers.
The facility represents an important step towards positioning Kenya’s livestock sector for greater market access, investment and economic growth.
KAGRC continues to position itself as a strategic partner in livestock development, collaborating with counties, cooperatives and other stakeholders to deliver superior animal genetics, boost productivity and transform livelihoods across Kenya. Today, KAGRC hosted a delegation from the Hong Kong Red Cross and the Kenya Red Cross Society to explore opportunities for expanding the KAGRC–KRCS Livestock Breed Improvement Programme to Tana River, West Pokot and Baringo counties following its successful launch in Kajiado County.
The team was welcomed by KAGRC Board Chairman, Hon. Nuh Abdi (Dr.), Managing Director, Dr. Benadatte Misoi, and members of the management team. Present from the Hong Kong Red Cross were Dr. Joyce Chiny, Head of International & Relief Service, and Angie Ho, International & Relief Service Officer, alongside Elizabeth Osodo, Strategic Partnerships Officer, and Charles Jow from the Kenya Red Cross Society.
The visit provided an opportunity to showcase the transformative programme, which leverages superior animal genetics and modern reproductive technologies to improve livestock productivity, strengthen food security and enhance climate resilience among pastoral communities in Kenya's arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs).
The pilot programme targets the synchronization and insemination of more than 4,000 cows, with an estimated 20,000 people expected to benefit through increased milk production, improved household incomes, enhanced nutrition and sustainable livelihoods.
By introducing superior breeds such as Sahiwal, Boran, Jersey and Magic 50, and combining KAGRC's expertise in animal genetics and artificial insemination with the Kenya Red Cross Society's extensive humanitarian reach, the partnership is laying the foundation for resilient livestock systems and prosperous livestock communities across Kenya.
SP: Better genetics. Stronger herds. Greater productivity.
Strengthening livestock production through improved genetics is key to increasing productivity, enhancing quality, and building a more resilient and competitive livestock sector.

Participants of the Regional Summer School on Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ARTs) in Livestock Breeding have concluded a two-day practical training programme hosted by the Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRC) in Kirinyaga and at the KAGRC Headquarters in Lower Kabete, Nairobi.
The training brought together 50 participants from 28 countries across Africa, providing a unique platform for regional knowledge exchange and capacity building in modern livestock breeding technologies.
The programme began at the KAGRC Goat Artificial Insemination (AI) Centre in Kirinyaga, where participants received both theoretical and practical training on semen collection, quality assessment, dilution, handling, insemination techniques, and semen distribution. They also toured the Centre’s facilities and took part in hands-on demonstrations on goat artificial insemination, gaining practical experience in the application of reproductive technologies for livestock improvement.
On the second day, the participants visited the KAGRC Headquarters in Lower Kabete, Nairobi, where they were received by Managing Director Dr. Bernadette J. Misoi, alongside Director of Research and Technical Services Dr. Roselyne Wambugu and the technical team. The participants were taken through a brief overview of KAGRC’s mandate, operations, and role in livestock genetic improvement in Kenya.
The visit also featured a bull parade showcasing KAGRC’s seven cattle bull breeds: Guernsey, Jersey, Magic 50, Friesian, Boran, Sahiwal, and Ayrshire. In addition, the participants received practical training on semen collection, semen processing, and liquid nitrogen processing and handling, enhancing their understanding of the technologies and systems that support the production, preservation, and distribution of high-quality animal genetic material.
The two-day training provided participants with valuable hands-on experience and strengthened their technical capacity in the use of assisted reproductive technologies for efficient livestock breeding and genetic improvement, while also fostering regional collaboration among livestock professionals from across the African continent.
Every great bull has a story. Budhe's maternal grandsire is C.A. Sansão, a legendary Gir sire whose daughters became world record holders for milk production. With a composition of 50% Gir, 14% Sahiwal, 13% Fleckvieh, 6% Jersey and 17% other exotic breeds, Budhe has excellent feed conversion, strong fertility and high tolerance to tick-borne diseases and heat. @KAGRC_KE today hosted the Kisumu County delegation led by Mr. Kenneth Onyango, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking the beginning of a strategic partnership to accelerate dairy development in the region. Other members of the Kisumu County delegation included Mr. Eric Ogalo, Chief Officer; Mr. Otieno Aloka, County Attorney; Dr. George Odhiambo; County Director of Veterinary Services (CDVS) and Mr. Charles Kakuku, County Director of Livestock Production (CDLP)
The MoU was signed in the presence of KAGRC Board Chairman, Hon. Dr. Nuh Nassir Abdi, and Managing Director, Dr. Benadette J. Misoi, who reaffirmed KAGRC's commitment to supporting Counties and institutions in transforming Kenya's livestock sector through superior animal genetics.
Despite its enormous agricultural potential, Kisumu County continues to experience a significant milk deficit, with many dairy farmers relying on low-producing indigenous breeds. The partnership seeks to reverse this trend by providing access to superior dairy genetics, quality semen, artificial insemination services, liquid nitrogen, and technical expertise to upgrade local herds, increase milk productivity, improve climate resilience, and enhance farmer incomes.
Following the signing of MoU, KAGRC's proven genetics and breeding technologies will strengthen the Kisumu Dairy Development Center (KDDC) which will serve as a Centre of Excellence for dairy breeding, farmer training, and climate-smart livestock production, creating sustainable opportunities for thousands of smallholder farmers across Kisumu County.
Day 2 of the Kenya Meat Conference focused on strengthening meat market regulation, setting clearer standards, and building a more competitive meat sector for Kenya's farmers.
KAGRC plays a key role in production and certification of high-quality, disease-free breeding stock and semen thereby giving farmers genetics they can trust. Better breeding means healthier, more productive animals and that translates into better meat, higher returns, and a more competitive industry, from the farm to export markets.
The session was graced by the Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, Hon. Jonathan Mueke. We remain committed to working alongside government to advance this shared vision for Kenya's livestock sector.
