Merrillville, Indiana is becoming a major hub for the Sikh community in the Midwest, and a new $10 million Gurdwara Sahib is the latest sign of that growth.

According to organizers, the project is one of the largest Sikh religious centers in the Midwest, sitting on 20 acres with a 15,000 square foot building and a 150-foot elevation. They say the goal is to create a place that resembles the grand Gurdwaras found in India while serving as a spiritual, cultural, and community hub for generations.

In their own video announcement, community leaders describe Merrillville as becoming a destination for the Sikh community, saying the area is now “on the map” and highlighting future opportunities for families, businesses, and the broader community.

They say the project came together through support and donations from people across Indiana and multiple other states, calling it a historic achievement and a lasting legacy for the Sikh community.

The full video is nearly 20 minutes long and is a mix of Indian languages and English. I was only able to AI translate about 5 minutes of the video, but even that portion highlights the scale of the project, the growth of the congregation, and the significance they place on this new center.
