Welcome to the new issue of WHOLE, the KamiLimu magazine! On the cover is Bridgette Musango, a soon-to-be JKUAT graduate, on becoming a holistic engineer.
Inside, three alumni carving their place in the world, identical twins who mentored our Software Eng. track, and introducing the new Cohort 10. Also, you will find three games we've created ourselves: a crossword, Connections, and a jigsaw to play.
Experience the interactive magazine best using a laptop/tablet. Read, play, and share.

What started with a @Mozilla Foundation x KamiLimu assembly on May 6th bringing together 86 students (44 women, 42 men) from 19 universities across Kenya, has today progressed into KamiLimu’s inaugural Hackathon. This year’s theme is “Democracy and AI” with 3 thematic areas; Information Integrity, Government Accountability and Civic Literacy.
From 34 teams that participated in the problem ideation phase that ran from 7th to 29th May, 16 teams were selected. These 16 teams from 10 universities were scored on a 100-point rubric which included relevance of the problem, research evidence (citations and statistics to back up claims), technical feasibility of proposed solution among other metrics.
Today, working in pairs, they are racing against the clock to translate those ideas into schemas, integrate AI into their workflows and deliver 3-minutes pitches in front of a panel of judges.
Last week I taught something @KamiLimu that I am quite proud of curating from scratch. It's the foundation session ahead of our other sessions on responsible use of AI across careers, academia, and software engineering, co-taught by our professional mentors.
Today I just taught the first class on writing & storytelling for public speaking @KamiLimu. It reminded me of this comment. Here to add that I am a constant learner and one big way I am, is that I am an educator and I explore interesting topics. Keeps me sharp and improving. 😌
LRT has inspired me to share one of the best gifts I've ever received.
Last year's mentees @KamiLimu gifted me this hand-crafted book, illustrated thru the things I love: travel, books, songs, film, plants.
Sharing just 3 out of 36 illustrations. I cherish this so much. ❤️
Wish to learn about scholarship and postgraduate applications from our mentors and track record?
We moved our 11th virtual scholarship workshop to May 27, 29, and 30th with a class size of 20 so we can effectively support participants who wish to benefit from a free review of a full application.
This workshop is suitable for industry professionals and graduates who wish to pursue graduate studies, fellowships, or are simply curious about learning this set of writing skills.
We have amazing news. 🎉
Dr. Everlyn Asiko, our Cohort 4 alumna, has just graduated with a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of Cape Town.
In her own words:
"Dr. @chao_mbogho and KamiLimu truly inspired me to pursue a PhD. I always knew I wanted to, but seeing Dr. C's journey and interacting with her showed me what that path can look like in practice. KamiLimu's lessons and success stories have consistently challenged me to push further and aim higher."
@everlyn_asiko , watching you walk this path, from KamiLimu to an MSc in Mathematical Sciences to a PhD at UCT, is an absolute joy! May you continue thriving and rising.
@chao_mbogho@KamiLimu And almost 10 years later...here I am benefiting from a dream @chao_mbogho chose to not give up on.... emotional if I think about it🥹
9 years, 8 months & 6 days ago I sent out this mail. We've just launched our 10th cohort & @KamiLimu celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.
I'm glad I didn't quit the many times I almost did. Now proud to say the org has outgrown me & its vision scaling across multiple hands.
We are incredibly proud to share that our Cohort 8 alumnus and student at USIU-Africa, @danny_ercy was selected as a 2026 Rhodes Scholar! Danny will be pursuing an MSc in Modelling for Global Health at the University of Oxford, based at Oriel College. 🎉
In his words:
"KamiLimu gave me the confidence to aim far beyond what I once thought possible. Growing up in Burundi, I had little exposure to opportunities like the Rhodes Scholarship, and the idea of pursuing such a path once felt unimaginable. Through KamiLimu, what once seemed out of reach became something I could genuinely work toward and achieve."
Specifically, Danny cited gaining holistic skills such as scholarship writing, public speaking, and responsible innovation as having been instrumental in preparing him for the application and interview processes.
Congratulations, Danny!
Very thankful to @belnizzo, @Phyian_karinge@youngtechiez for the inspiration to apply, my lecturer D. Gichohi for the reference letter, @KamiLimu and @chao_mbogho for the amazing forum and constructive feedback as well as my friends who assisted me throughout the application 🙏
