In their new Unabomber movie, the main investigator of the case is an FBI agent named Joanne Miller, played by Shailene Woodley, who spends the film battling institutional sexism.

In reality, there was no lead female FBI agent working the case.

The lead agents were James R. Fitzgerald, Terry Turchie, and Jim Freeman​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​.

Amanda Platt just gave the most powerful speech I think I have ever heard, to an international audience in Washington D.C.

Chanting about the extermination of people has consequences. Denying that this is happening, or claiming that such chants do not have consequences is reckless and dangerous.

Today, fires are being lit all over South Africa. 🇿🇦

In back gardens and restaurants. Among the vineyards of the Cape and under a million stars in the African bush.

Lamb chops sizzling over the coals. Boerewors on the grid. Sosaties, pap and chakalaka. A braaibroodjie — that wonderful South African invention of toasted bread, cheese, tomato and onion cooked over the fire. Potato salad on the table, a good South African wine being poured, and perhaps a koeksister or milk tart dusted with cinnamon to finish.

But as good as the food may be, a braai has never only been about what’s on the fire.

It is standing around the fire with friends and family. The stories. The laughter. The warmth. The way there always seems to be room for one more.

We are a rainbow nation of many languages, many cultures, many histories and many tables. Today, across the country, we gather around them.

Perhaps that is Ubuntu in its simplest form — I am because we are.

I came to South Africa more than 40 years ago. Days like today remind me why I chose to stay.
