Case Update

Republic v. Sumaila Abdul Rahman & 4 Ors (NDA case).

Prosecution has closed its case. In all, Prosecution called 10 witnesses.

Defence to file their submission of no case to answer by 4 January 2024. Prosecution to file its response by 25 January 2024.

Case adjourned to 12 February 2024 for mention.

It's been an insightful two days in Wa addressing some newsroom challenges as we proposed digital verification & factchecking practices to journalists.
We appreciate their pledge to apply the knowledge received to their work.

With support from @GoogleNewsInit, we started the two-day "Digital verification and fact-checking workshop for African newsrooms" today in Ghana.
We had 35 journalists across newsrooms based in Wa learning the importance of including fact-checking in their journalism practise.

Considering the importance of identifying the issues plaguing the mediascape, our editor, @nathangadugah, explained the information disorder eco-system.
He showed that people's intent for manipulating information is why we have misinformation, disinformation & malinformation.

.@nathangadugah also taught journalists the fact-checking process and guided them to practise claim-sourcing.
"Identifying a claim is easily the most important part of the fact-checking process; without the right indicators, a fact-checker will go on a wild goose chase," he said.

As content on social media can be manipulative and deceptive, our team lead, @carolineanipah also demonstrated to journalists how to use digital verification tools such as @Google Reverse Image Search, Fact-check Explorer, InVid and YouTube Data Viewer to detect such content.
