An emissions trading scheme (ETS) is a market-based climate policy tool that sets a limit on greenhouse gas emissions and allows companies to buy and sell emission allowances within this limit. ETSs are becoming popular worldwide as they are considered to be among the most effective and impactful ways to mitigate emissions cost-effectively.

This map tracks ETS statuses across 20 emerging economies, collectively representing approximately a third of global GDP. Some have operational systems. Others are building one. A few are getting started. But the direction is the same.

This graduation marks an important milestone in advancing public policy education and developing national capabilities.

Methane intensity varies significantly across major oil and gas producers, by up to eight times between comparable countries.

This chart ranks 29 producers by methane intensity (kg per barrel of oil equivalent). Norway leads at 0.01 kg/boe, followed by Saudi Arabia at 0.39, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

As the EU's Methane Emissions Reduction Regulation (MERR) and Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) take effect, these differences will have growing implications for market access and competitiveness.

What does a snapshot of Saudi Arabia’s labor market reveal about how artificial intelligence interacts with work?

One useful way to frame this question is by distinguishing between AI-augmentable jobs, where technology supports tasks while human judgment and decision-making remain central, and AI-automatable jobs, where tasks are repetitive and standardized enough to be largely performed by AI.

Between 75% and 80% of Saudi private sector employment falls into occupations with high exposure to artificial intelligence. This indicates that AI adoption has a great potential to influence how tasks are carried out across jobs, rather than leading to uniform job replacement across the labor market.
