🎙📢🗣📣My 15 tips for you to become a champion Programme Director /MC 🧵
1. Know your brief. Why are you there? What piece of communication are you expected to land?
2. Know your audience. I cannot have the same tone when I MC’d The #BRICSSummit2023 compared to a corporate awards, wedding or book launch.
3 Understand why you were booked in the first place. What do the event organisers see in you? Deliver to that expectation.
4. Be able to work within a format and tight script and be able to work outside a scripted format at the same too. The programme changes. But manage time.
5. Learn from industry champions but don’t speak and sound like someone else. If you mimic my style you are telling the organisers to hire me not you.
6 Start with a good story that links to the theme of the event. The audience will remember that long after they’ve forgotten the hectic number crunching at a business event.
7 Do not be cliched - the two worst are
a) This person needs no introduction and then you rattle of their bio anyway. Decide are you going to intro them with a bio or not and just do it. Don’t do half measures.
2 ) Thank you for taking out time from your busy schedule to be with us. (My goodness the speaker is there because he or she sees value in being there)
8. Use an analogy and story telling to make your point . At the recent @iatf2023 I spoke about defenders and goalkeepers trying to prevent you from scoring when discussing the push back as Africa becomes more intentional to expand Intra- African and Africa to the world trade .The audience remembered that. ( they told me )
9 Understand your privilege of having a seat at the table and make the effort to connect with a cross section of delegates and engage them . It’s not in your briefing notes but it’s what a champion speaker does.
10. If you are not a stand up comedian then understand you were not hired for that role. Don’t try to be @davidkau1@Trevornoah@tumi_morake@RiaadMoosa@joeyrasdien@iamSivN . You are not them and they are not you. Don’t do internet jokes either. The audience can do that for free. Don’t speak like a politician.
11. Be witty and In touch with both your audience and speaker. Your intro and back announcing a speaker should relate to their talk
12. Be topical and in the moment. If you are MC at an event celebrating excellence how can you not bring up @SiyaKolisi@RassieRugby and that glorious Springboks Rugby World Cup victory.
13.Position yourself well as an MC or speaker. You can’t be a jack of all trades. I do not get booked to be a comedian but I do get booked if an event needs someone that is authoritative , articulate , witty, inspirational , engaging, can moderate discussions and has a Champion People Champion Nation theme running through his speaker and audience interaction. That’s how I’ve positioned myself. Other MC’s that play in the spaces I do and I admire their work include @thaminkadimeng@TheRealNozi@bonglez@Andile_Khumalo@CoruscaKhaya@bronwynnielsen@gugumfuphi@LeanneManas@imanrappetti and @FifiPeters@niajaman . We overlap and yet we are unique .
What about you?
14. Bottom line be in service to the client that booked you. You are their ambassador at the podium, you are their mechanic, you are their plumber. You are their problem solver so solve it.
15. Speak well, read well , be impactful and not boringly predictable. Show up! Be the champion in your space. Having a seat at at the table or standing room at the podium is a huge privilege. 🏆🇿🇦
Oh one final point be aware that the key decision maker for the next event that that you would like to be hired as Programme Director is in the audience
These are 15 points and I know there are many more so go ahead add to this list in the replies
