The NCAA hired a former politician as commissioner in hopes of getting the federal government to re-establish a version of what SCOTUS ruled a borderline criminal enterprise. UNANIMOUSLY. Nobody is arguing Saban’s greatness. Or what he’s worth. It’s just the height of hypocrisy to say the game is in danger now that the actual “stars of the show” are getting a significant slice of the pie.
Nick Saban went to Washington to testify that spending in college football is out of control and will eventually destroy the sport.
Saban had a “market rate review” or “pay adjustment” provision in his contracts that ensured he remained the highest paid coach in college football. The NCAA is a cartel seeking an anti trust exemption to limit what athletes can earn. Saban as their star witness is pretty damn rich.
@CaptKen6 I’m not saying I like where we’re headed. But the NCAA’s unbridled arrogance led us here. And the universities wanted it both ways. They wanted the money of professional sports and maintain amateur and non profit status. I just think that’s grossly unfair 🤷♂️
The same sport that made him a wealthy man but wouldn’t let a kid have cream cheese on his bagel (Bylaw 16.02.3)? The same sport that made the performers (players) who generated the hundreds of millions of dollars with their athletic abilities be compensated with a bag of cash under the table like a drug dealer? Except at Bama I’m sure. The Supreme Court ruled UNANIMOUSLY against that sport and I’m glad they did.
Saban is a phenomenal coach. Best of my lifetime. What made him successful was great players. Jimmy’s and Joe’s beat X’s and O’s.
SCOTUS voted UNANIMOUSLY that the NCAA was in violation of anti trust laws and the former model was exploiting student athletes. That’s the law, like it or not. Now he’s basically in DC asking for permission to break that law with an anti trust exemption.
I’m an unapologetic Trump supporting MAGA Republican. But if MAGA “bona fides” require unconditional loyalty to a nepotistic and icky endorsement, count me out. Nothing personal but MAGA has no long term future if it’s this superficial.
Political operatives are paid to win elections, by nearly any means necessary. They aren’t paid to educate voters on which candidates are smart and competent. That’s our job. If you get a shitshow, you voted for it.
If you spend any time on the South Carolina coast you had to know that a New Yorker would eventually endorse an Ohioan to be governor of South Carolina.
It’s the equivalent of parents getting a credit card in their kids and grandkids names. Living big while future generations will choke on the bill. Quantitative easing, central bankers, and government deficits are all to keep the wind in the sails of the asset class. It’s immoral. But hey, let’s party.
@hughhewitt One talking head says another talking head understands this regime and it’s fanaticism. Anyone of reasonable intelligence should laugh out loud at that single sentence. Stop being sheep people.
@CGasparino You mean the Strait of Hormuz that was open 39 days ago. The one that had over 100 tankers delivering oil to the world everyday before the war? That one?
