Are they just there ripping off the original ideas from books they reject? I think @EHollisAuthor shows integrity by being concerned about originality.

@carlywatters Unfortunately, some publishers and agents who SAY they are open to underrepresented minorities nevertheless have pre-conceived notions of minority life that they want to perpetuate. That openness is closed to new perspectives.

@GulinoSal @shrubaboti I am so sorry about this. I agree with those who suggest self-publishing. Just get an editor if you do. Also, all isn't lost. Just remember that oncologists treat cancer, not you. Keep focused on living. I wrote one of my books while receiving chemo. My heart is with you. 💕

@Siennafrst It would not only have been kind, but professional. The quest is for simple professionalism. If an agent can't respond, the agent should close to queries until they can. That's business. Some agents' egos are fed by the number of queries they receive. Egotism is unprofessional.

@Siennafrst Thanks Sienna. I didn't even think of getting a publisher at first. Now, having self-published, I'm querying to tap in to the traditional system for my new books. Sadly, discourteous agents degrade the process.. but maybe you're right, together we can revolutionize the industry👍

@Siennafrst Yes, disrespect is built-in. I was appalled the first time I read an agency's excuse that, overloaded with queries, they may not even respond to your query. Then I realised that many agents seem to think that that discourtesy is professional and excusable because of the volume

Some agencies are open to queries from BIPOC, but they don't relish stories that make them uncomfortable. Maybe a strong, well-informed agent could represent a book that challenges the status quo.

We must eat, so books that "they" want to sell may win over books we want to write. But I think we must, at least some time in our lives, write whatever the heart demands.

@findmeediting What is also true is that even some agencies that claim receptiveness to BIPOC or specifically invite submissions from underrepresented groups, want a particular stereotypical narrative.

@AndrewJKing5 @sprnklsofdreams ...but don't authors have some say in final cover design? I thought covers were a collaborative effort with the art dept and someone must give guidelines for them to begin artwork. At what stage is this 'whitewashing' happening? Is it policy or drawing board?
