Saint Jude Hospital Handing Over Ceremony
I have immense gratitude for today, as the date for the handing over ceremony of the Saint Jude Hospital after 16 years.
I had not been to the original Saint Jude site in over 16 years.
There is still immense work to be done, especially among people, young and old who still carry the colonial prejudices that would make them turn their noses on the language of survival and resistance of their forefathers and foremothers.
There are many elements of Saint Lucian culture, identity and development that are encoded in the Kwéyòl language, but remain in a place of marginalisation because we have not valued, and advanced the language as it should be.

It remains a major concern that there are children whose first language is Kwéyòl, who are instructed only in English. There are significant studies that have been done on the damage this has done to many generations of Saint Lucians.
