Spotify founder Daniel Ek to the CEO of Uber: “Since when is life about happiness?”

When Dara Khosrowshahi was offered the job of Uber CEO, he consulted his long-time friend Daniel Ek, the founder of Spotify.

Dara told Daniel that he was already happy being the CEO of Expedia, to which Daniel replied, “Since when is life about happiness? It’s about impact. You can have an impact on Uber, which is a really important company in the world that’s shaping the future of cities.”

Daniel expands on what he meant by his advice to Dara:

“I think happiness is a trailing indicator of impact . . . and impact is something that’s deeply personal to you. Only you can define what impact means for you . . . What was obvious for me, with someone like Dara, was he was content. He wasn’t happy. Knowing him for a while, he had gone through a phase where he had a lot of ups and downs with Expedia, and he mostly figured it out . . . Life was good. It was really easy. But there was an element of him — and you could hear it in his voice — where he was sort of like . . . ‘Why aren’t you going to go for greatness?’ ‘Why aren’t you going to test yourself?’ Because if you succeed this could be huge and you don’t really get many of these chances in your life.”

Daniel continues:

“But with another person, I might have given totally different piece of advice. So I don’t think it’s a universal truth. But I do think the universal truth is that happiness trails impact and impact is something that’s highly unique. It could be something innate in you. It could be having impact on other people. It could be having impact by being a great father around your kids. I don’t pretend to know that there’s one game to play or one universal truth of life. I certainly believe for entrepreneurial types — probably more like myself — this is really one of those key things: consider impact.”

@svembu Agree, countries weren’t colonised for any altruistic purposes. All the systems were designed to support the colonial rule and maybe to some degree to keep the discontent under check and ensure sustained value drain for as long as viable.

I fail to understand how almost every second thing is becoming a threat to sovereignty. Grounds on which such threats are based needs to be made known to general public to build trust and confidence. Else, it’s just smoke screen for political insecurity.

Paul Graham explains his rule of thumb for when to launch your product

“The risk of launching early is not as great as the risk of launching late… So you’ve got to have a good rule of thumb about when to launch. And my rule of thumb is launch as soon as you have a quantum of utility, which means as soon as there’s one person in the world who is glad you launched because now they can do something that they couldn’t do.”

He continues:

“If you have something that if you launched it, no one would be happy, then you’re not ready to launch… [But] if there’s 10 people who are super excited and nobody else cares, totally launch. That’s perfectly fine. That’s great.”

जबतक अनपढ़, अयोग्य दृष्टिहीन और भ्रष्ट नेताओं की फौज 'भाग्य-विधाता' बनी रहेगी, दिन रात मेहनत करने वाला भविष्य ऐसे ही रोएगा।

इन लुटेरों ने भ्रष्टाचार के कुछ लाख रुपये कमाने के लिए 23 लाख बच्चों का भविष्य गर्त में डाल दिया। यह पहली बार नहीं है। 10 साल में 89 से ज्यादा पेपर लीक हुए हैं।

अपने बच्चों का भविष्य ठीक करना है तो पढ़े-लिखे और दृष्टिसंपन्न नेताओं को चुनना शुरू करो, वरना पीढ़ियां इसी तरह रोएंगी।

It is shocking that despite TVK being the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu State Assembly Elections, the TN State Governor has not yet invited the TVK leader, Mr Vijay, to form the Government.
I demand that in the interest of Democracy, the Governor of Tamil Nadu immediately invite the TVK leader to form the State Cabinet and himself be invited by the Governor to be made Chief Minister and prove his majority on the floor of the Assembly.

Message is more important than Medium. If an important issue is being raised by a person you don’t usually agree with or may not find the smartest or best equipped on the subject - don’t ignore the issue. Takes a form of detachment to view message & messenger as being different.

Interesting to note that during recent elections city of Kolkata had 10 thousand more CAPF Personnel deployed than entire Manipur which has been affected so much due to the ongoing conflict & violence. This just leaves one confused about system’s priorities & policies.
