Bengal's jute sector is witnessing a broader revival. Three more closed jute mills—Baranagar Jute Mill, Jagaddal Jute Industries and EMCO Jute Mill—are set to reopen, restoring jobs for over 7,000 workers. This follows the reopening of Naihati and Kankinara jute mills, which together are expected to bring back around 5,500 jobs, taking the total employment restoration to more than 12,500 workers across five mills.
Government of West Bengal has set a July 10 target to reopen all currently closed jute mills. If achieved, it would mark one of the largest coordinated revivals of Bengal's traditional jute industry in recent years, bringing thousands of workers back to production and signalling renewed momentum for a sector that remains central to the state's industrial economy.

His name was Abdul Hamid.
He was born on July 1, 1933, in Dhamupur, a small village in Ghazipur district, Uttar Pradesh.
His father had served in the Army, and Abdul Hamid wanted the same life.
He joined the Indian Army in 1954 and was posted to the 4th Battalion, The Grenadiers.
In 1962, he fought in the war against China at Namka Chu, one of the toughest battles of that conflict.
Three years later came the war that made him a legend.
In September 1965, Pakistan launched a major armoured offensive into the Khem Karan sector of Punjab with American made Patton tanks, then regarded as among the finest tanks in the world.
The battle would become known as Asal Uttar.
Abdul Hamid was a Company Quartermaster Havildar.
His weapon was a 106 mm recoilless gun mounted on an open jeep.
A jeep against advancing tanks.
Using speed, concealment and remarkable accuracy, he struck the Pakistani armour again and again.
He destroyed several Patton tanks before the enemy could locate him.
The official Param Vir Chakra citation records the destruction of multiple enemy tanks, while Army memorials credit him with destroying as many as eight during the battle.
On September 10, 1965, while engaging another tank, his position was hit by enemy fire.
He was killed in action.
His courage helped halt the Pakistani advance at Asal Uttar. So many Patton tanks were destroyed that the battlefield came to be known as Patton Nagar.
For his extraordinary bravery, Abdul Hamid was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest gallantry award. The medal was presented to his wife, Rasoolan Bibi.
Today is his birthday.

Former bureaucrat R.S. Sharma recalls preparing for the launch of Digital India on 1 July 2015. While officials briefed the Prime Minister about initiatives like DigiLocker, online hospital registration, and digital KYC, PM Modi asked a simple question: "How will you explain DigiLocker to an ordinary citizen?"
When the explanation became too technical, PM Modi offered his own. He described a job applicant rushing to an interview with multiple certificates, only to fumble through papers. "If all the documents are stored safely in a DigiLocker on the phone," he explained, "they can be shown instantly whenever needed." This is PM Modi's unique strength, not just understanding technology, but translating complex digital ideas into simple, relatable examples that every Indian could connect with.

This is an excellent article by H.E @takaichi_sanae, Prime Minister of Japan.
It has accurately captured the pivotal role of Assam and the North East in the continued deepening of India-Japan partnership.
We deeply appreciate Japan's support in several transformative projects in our region.
On behalf of the people of Assam, I extend a very warm welcome to Her Excellency as she begins her visit to India today. We look forward to the discussions and outcomes of the India-Japan Annual Summit.

Kapil Dev had zero faith in his No. 11, so he did the unthinkable. 😳
Lord's. 1990. 9 wickets down. 24 runs needed to save the follow-on, most players would buckle under the "pressure". Knowing No. 11 Narendra Hirwani wouldn't survive long, Kapil Paji took matters into his own hands.
He smashed 4 consecutive sixes, saved the follow-on, and on the very next over Hirwani got out.
Kapil Dev later admitted he defended first two bowls so that england players come inside the circle so that he can play his shots🤯
Absolute elite match awareness. 🔥
Modern India's 'most consequential Assamese', Tapan Deka, IPS, retires today as longest-serving Director of Intelligence Bureau, after two extensions. A lifetime in shadows. Normal mortals will never know what you have done for India as its "Super Spy." Take a bow, Tapan Da..
Rape victim k!lled her rapist after his release.
She got arrested and her statement was -
“He raped me, not the State. Who gave you the right to forgive him without consulting me?”
Do you agree with her,
Yes or No?
I wanted a fan for the puja room, my electrician came home in 2hrs with the fan, installed it and took just 100 odd ₹ for labour
Here in Paris this couple struggled to find a fan for 3 days - even fans are sold out due to a 40 degree heatwave 🥵
We really underestimate the privileges India offers 😅
Landing in Geneva, one is reminded how quick we are to romanticise “the West” and run down our own systems in India.
Geneva is beautiful, efficient in many ways, no doubt. But at the airport? No lifts or elevators where you’d expect them, confusing baggage belts, barely any signage or help.
A lady with crutches had to hobble down the stairs because there was no elevator!
It made me think of our own airports — from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to Indira Gandhi International Airport, Rajabhoj International Airport, Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport and Jolly Grant Airport — where navigation, accessibility, and passenger support are so great . Such amazing service and aliveness !
We in India often complain endlessly about how bad things are at home and how “great” “abroad” is. Travel teaches the opposite too: every system has its flaws. And sometimes, back home, we are doing far better than we give ourselves credit for.
