Rusové zřejmě počítali s tím, že v Německu budou rychle odhaleni. A tak se pozornost přesouvá tam, kde je prostředí pro ruské působení podstatně příjemnější. Do Prahy.

Předchozí česká vláda byla jedním z nejvýraznějších podporovatelů Ukrajiny. Jenže politickou vůli skutečně se vypořádat s ruským vlivem doma bohužel nenašla.

A teď je situace ještě zajímavější. K moci přišli politici, kteří svou kampaň stavěli mimo jiné na omezení dodávek zbraní Ukrajině. Pro Moskvu se tedy zdejší klima rozhodně nezhoršilo.

Přitom už předtím se tu Rusům nežilo špatně.

V Praze dál funguje takzvaný Ruský dům provozovaný Rossotrudničestvem – ruskou státní agenturou podřízenou ministerstvu zahraničí, která je od července 2022 na sankčním seznamu EU.

Rusko a lidé napojení na režim tu vlastní obrovské množství nemovitostí a pozemků.

A ruští podnikatelé? Také žádná tragédie.

Upozorňovala jsem na to ještě dřív. Třetina všech firem v EU, Velké Británii a Švýcarsku, jejichž konečným vlastníkem je Rus, sídlí v Česku. Třetina. Jen v Praze je to kolem 10 tisíc firem. Pro srovnání: v celé Velké Británii jsou takové firmy přibližně čtyři tisíce.

A samozřejmě je tu stále ruská ambasáda a ruská velvyslankyně.

Ta si dnes může sednout naproti českému ministrovi zahraničí a vysvětlovat mu, že obvinění Ruska jsou jen provokací výhodnou pro „stoupence kyjevského režimu“.

A když už je u toho, může připomenout i Vrbětice.

Podle ruské strany současná obvinění „přes kopírák“ opakují případ Skripalových a právě Vrbětice. Oba případy prý Evropané využili k „rozdmýchávání rusofobie“ a ničení vztahů s Ruskem. „Ruská stopa“ údajně nikdy nebyla prokázána.

Vrbětice. Výbuchy na českém území, při kterých zemřeli dva čeští občané.

A ruská velvyslankyně může sedět přímo v Praze a veřejně zpochybňovat ruskou odpovědnost a české závěry o případu, při kterém zemřeli dva lidé.

Česko ji tu dál nechává.
Stejně jako tu nechává Ruský dům. Zůstává tu rozsáhlé ruské ekonomické a majetkové zázemí.

A pokud se potvrdí, že Praha slouží také jako zázemí pro ruské aktivity směřující za české hranice, například proti Německu, dostává to celé ještě absurdnější rozměr.

“The Trump effect”

Russian attacks on Ukraine intensified soon after Trump was elected in November 2024, and they have kept intensifying since. See the graph. I call it the Trump effect.

Instead of ending the war in twenty-four hours, as he promised, Trump gave Putin a green light. He suspended military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine. He threatened Zelenskyy in the Oval Office. He praised Putin, called him a friend and invited him to America. He lifted sanctions on russian oil exports. He extended an invitation for russia to attend the G20.

Each of these steps sent the same signal to the Kremlin: the political cost of escalation is falling. Putin read that signal loud and clear. When aggression is tolerated, escalation is cheap.

There is a basic principle of deterrence here. Deterrence works only if the aggressor believes that crossing a line will be punished. When the line is erased and the punishment is replaced with praise, the aggressor updates his expectations and acts accordingly. That is what we have watched happen over the past twenty months.

In April 2022, a 12-year-old Russian girl named Masha Moskalyova was told in art class to draw a picture supporting russian troops in Ukraine.

Instead, she drew a Ukrainian mother protecting her child as russian missiles flew toward them.

On the Ukrainian flag she wrote, “Glory to Ukraine.” On the russian flag: “No to war. No to Putin.”

Her school reported her to the authorities.

Police began investigating her father, Alexei Moskalyov, a single father who had raised Masha largely on his own. They searched his social media and discovered posts criticizing russia’s invasion and documenting russian atrocities in Bucha.

In December 2022, around a dozen russian security officers raided their home. They ransacked it, seized their computers, phones, and savings.

Alexei later said that during interrogations, officers beat him and slammed his head against the wall and floor. They blasted the russian national anthem at full volume while questioning him.

Eventually, the regime charged him with repeatedly “discrediting” the russian military because of his anti-war social-media posts.

Masha was taken away from him and placed in a state “social rehabilitation” center.

Alexei was sentenced to two years in a penal colony.

He later described horrific conditions there: a tiny punishment cell roughly two meters long, freezing temperatures, rats crawling out of the sewer, and days when he was forced to stand for as long as 16 hours because the bunk was locked against the wall.

Meanwhile, his daughter wrote to him.

“Dad, don’t give up.”

“You are my hero.”

They were separated for more than a year and a half.

On October 15, 2024, Alexei finally walked out of prison.

Masha was waiting for him.

Five days later, they fled russia.

They first escaped to Armenia and applied for a German humanitarian visa. After waiting for more than a year, their case stalled when Germany suspended the relevant humanitarian admission program.

Then France stepped in.

In March 2026, Masha and Alexei received French humanitarian visas and flew to Paris.

And on July 17, 2026, France granted them political asylum.

Today, Masha is drawing again and hopes to pursue art. She also writes and has spoken out in support of russian political prisoners.

When asked whether, knowing everything that happened afterward, she would still have made that drawing, Masha said she would.

“One only lives once.”

One drawing.

A child saying no to war.

And for that, the russian state destroyed their home, separated a father from his daughter, imprisoned him, and drove them both into exile.

This is what dictatorship looks like.
