BREAKING: The Trump admin proposes new rules to weaken the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and limit the law’s effectiveness. Here’s what’s at stake:

❌ No automatic protections for newly listed animal and plant species.
❌ Narrower “critical habitat” definition, ignoring historic areas vital for recovery.
❌ Easier approval for agencies to fast-track harmful projects like logging or drilling.
❌ Allowing economic interests to outweigh science.

These proposed regulations follow a series of other attacks on the ESA and wildlife by the second Trump administration. The public will have 30 days to issue comments on the proposed rules. Earthjustice will provide an action alert when the comment period opens.

“Most people are not going to allow the sacrifice of our natural world to a bunch of billionaires and corporate interests,” said Earthjustice attorney Kristen Boyles.

The Trump administration is attempting to weaken the Endangered Species Act with a proposal to narrow its definition of “harm.” But this ignores the reality that if we lost forests, wetlands and other habitats to industry, we’d also lose the wildlife that depend on them.

“This plan hacks apart the Endangered Species Act and creates a blueprint for the extinction for some of America’s most beloved wildlife,” said Stephanie Kurose, deputy director of government affairs at the Center for Biological Diversity in a statement, adding that the proposals were “a death sentence for wolverines, monarch butterflies, Florida manatees and so many other animals and plants that desperately need our help”.
