to silence workers, students, educators, and peace-loving people who dare to support Palestine. To every person taking risks to speak up for Palestinian dignity and safety, I see you, I hear you, and I am with you.
I ground my words in the realities of Israeli apartheid, and Israel’s ongoing domination and occupation of Palestinian lands. Governments and institutions in Canada are trying to use their weight to silence us 6/
I restate my call for an immediate ceasefire by Israeli forces, and for the immediate restoration of food, water, fuel, and electricity to Gaza. I applaud the many elected officials in Canada who have joined this call in recent days, and I hope even more of you will speak out. 5/
This is a despicable undercutting of the crisis hundreds of members of the Memorial community are fighting for the Provost and the Complement Advisory Committee to fix.
This statement is a continuation of an attempt to devalue the urgent needs facing the SWCC and is a glaring effort to convince students, faculty, and community members that there are not urgent concerns.
This is entirely false.
Students are united in the call for immediate increased support and funding for the on-campus Student Wellness and Counselling Centre. Recent reports of a potential loss of accreditation at the SWCC would escalate the already dire mental health crisis in the province 1/
While this grant will aid in the financial burden facing post-secondary students, it is a drop in the bucket of debt on the backs of young people in this country. @GovNL's massive cut of over $68 million in funding for the tuition offset grant 1/3
In Toronto for two days- just shocked a pedestrian I was chatting with when I told her that NL doesn’t have the pay per use bikes available. When I told her about the lack of bike lanes she asked how people live here (I didn’t have a good answer)
Pls give us bikes #yyt 🚲🚲
There's been a lot of discussion recently about restoring the reputation of @UMemorial & our pride in it. But a University is ultimately its people. @MUNSU35 makes me PROUD to be part of this community - as an alum& faculty.
Respect to student activists who will never ever stop.
These wins will be a result of the student movement and the countless students who have lobbied for change.
The student movement is always growing and I am confident that the NL movement will prevail as a leader in PSE and pave the way for accessible education in this country
I’ve been in the student movement for over five years. The past two years have been the most challenging, but by far the most inspiring.
I truly believe that we will see fully funded education, student debt forgiveness & a massive shift towards accessibility in the coming years
You really have to admire the success @MUNSU35 is having in getting student issues - particularly the financial struggles many are having at the moment - on the agenda at the moment.
This is not victory. This is silencing. Silencing is violence. It is individualistic. It is dismissal of accountability. And when I say accountability I’m not talking about Timmons. I’m talking about the Board and Academic Systems. It’s the beginning of a new journey of fight
CORRECTION:
During her voluntary, paid six-week leave of absence President Timmons will make approximately $52,000. (Based on 2021 income data)
The average Newfoundlander & Labradorian makes ~$38,600 per year. (Community Accounts NL)
Students are anxiously awaiting an update on tuition refunds from the @MemorialU Board of Regents
We received confirmation on Friday that a decision had been made during Thursday’s meeting but that we would have to wait for formal correspondence to be released
Where is it?
Movement, you need to also recognize that we are impressive because we fight to change the system, not fight to change what we can within that system. Small wins matter, small changes matter, but students are always going to fight for more and we won’t settle #FairDealatMUN
Going to take my leave from Twitter for a stretch, but I do what to say that yes, wins were made in senate & those wins matter. But students have the right to be upset that the structures that govern us are structures meant to stop every voice of dissent & every semblance 1/
Of real change. Yes we won extensions and small protections. But we also are only able to get the crumbs that are suggestions and recommendations. It’s not okay to accept that just because “that’s all we can do”. When folks talk about how impressed they are with the student 2/
