Hi all! Returning from #CHI2024, and just wanted to readvertise the paper @KatRoemmich and I worked on, titled "Overworking in HCI: A Reflection on Why We Are Burned Out, Stressed, and Out of Control; and What We Can Do About It" A thread:
Your employer could already be surveilling your emotional state — and there's no requirement for them to tell you 👁️ 😰
UMSI PhD student Kat Roemmich speaks with @BusinessInsider about emotion AI in the workplace: https://t.co/5NOca7qiZz
@KatRoemmich
Important note: many of the crisis centers mentioned had no idea that sensitive data from users was being shared via the Meta Pixel, and four centers immediately acted to stop data sharing.

@jshermcyber@DukeCyberPolicy@AlistairSimmons large & well-resourced companies have a shamefully poor handle on their enterprise data flows (including HR/employee data). outbound interfaces are messy and de-centralized. those surveyed may not know the answer, and may be unfamiliar with data practices from third party vendors
AI could be monitoring or manipulating your emotions at work. Our #CHI2023 paper studies this topic from worker perspectives. https://t.co/k9bQRBFHfV We call for a right to “emotional privacy,” finding that emotion AI at work may:
1) deeply violate worker privacy over emotional information; 2) function to enforce workers’ compliance with emotional labor expectations; and 3) expose workers to a wide range of privacy harms.
Thrilled to share our 2 papers forthcoming in #CSCW23: 1) analysis of EAI service claims, revealing unfairness & deception in its use in hiring https://t.co/nQ4P6DwSpV; and 2) https://t.co/4HVhDHH56z, finding EAI use in the workplace may magnify data subjects' existing challenges
Excited to share that my paper co-authored with @naz_andalibi exploring how data subjects think about emotion recognition-enabled wellbeing interventions on social media received an @acm_cscw Honorable Mention Award at #CSCW2021 this year. Read more here: https://t.co/CFK8N0X6SM
Have you joined or considered joining a support group on social media following pregnancy loss? We @umsi are conducting a study about what makes online groups helpful for some and unhelpful for others. Check out the screening survey: https://t.co/T9L2HlxOqQ
Please share!

Woah, woah, WOAH. An official @FTC blog post by a staff attorney noting that "The FTC Act prohibits unfair or deceptive practices. That would include the sale or use of – for example – racially biased algorithms." https://t.co/kM4u3gOEC5
