It is amusing to see CBK coming out with a press release to address the rumours which have been doing rounds on social media about the stability of the banking sector. CBK is supposed to provide a monthly report on the status of the banking sector and the economy.
Unfortunately, this report is always awfully delayed. I have complained about this issue countless times. We are just two weeks to December and the last report they published is for July. Such delays create an information vacuum which can be exploited by malicious people.
In this era of social media, online scaremongering can have devastating effects on the stability of the financial sector. Nature abhors a vacuum. If CBK doesn't want these rumours to spread, they should provide the correct information on a timely basis.
Even if you wanted to counter such rumours, how can you do it without the latest information? Who will believe you when quoting a July report? If you release the reports after the rumours, who will believe the information therein?
